I love this Arian tweet...
"Fulmer sittin in a million $ home cuz people like me"
Very true.

"I think my check was like $87 a month in dorm rooms," Foster said. "You had meals Monday through Friday, Saturday and Sunday you had to fend for yourself. I guess that's what the $87 was for. At the end of the month you don't have any money, your family can't send you any money, a lot of those guys -- 80 percent of the team is made up of kids from the inner city."
1. Do you realize how cheap the dining halls were then then? Hell even today they're cheap. Now, go to the chain/fast food areas and you'll spend more but regular dining hall food is not only good but also cheap. You can also use you VolCard to stock up on junk food and of course that's full price. There's also no tax on any sort of food at UT.
2. He's stretching the truth regarding closures. His preferred dining hall may have been closed on the weekend but others were open.
3. Take note of his sentence structure regarding parents not being able to send money - he's talking about impoverished kids not himself. He's also stretching the truth about the level of poverty/impoverishment - 80% is too much.
4. Players who are impoverished -- then and now -- and even those who aren't qualify for grants and scholarships that cater to various areas/needs. When you have a full ride, you can spend those grant/surplus schollie monies however you please (I know from experience). And with athletes the university helps them get them. Most poor kids qualify for Pell Grants and the like which are based on financial need.
IOW, Arian is doing his best to get more money for football. However, it's an academic/theoretical thing to him and unfortunately he's telling half-truths for his cause. This issue is his 'thing' but he could go about it without the falsities or hyperbole.
NOTE: Check my prior posts regarding Foster. You'll see that despite all this I've stated I like him.

So you don't think coaches sit in multi million dollar homes because of star athletes? Okay. :)

Dude wasn't that fricking great at Tennessee. Whoever paid him lost their arse on that deal.

Here's a 2015 chart of when dining areas are open. Not much has changed in terms of some being open while others are closed but not all are listed.
LINK
At present, you can eat for ~5 dollars a day -- even staff and faculty. Arian Foster, no doubt, enjoyed the Varsity Inn at Gibbs Hall which is no longer around. Like most dining halls that cater to athletes it offered better fare. However it was open on weekends (again others were/are). LINK /
Of Varsity Inn:
Now the Anderson Training Complex has its own dining hall.
But UT has never wanted for food options and has them both on and off campus, including steep discounts for other restaurants off-campus. The food is outstanding and it's cheap with a multitude of dining hall options that are spread all over campus.

“It’s easily the best cafeteria on campus,” Grant Self, sophomore in wildlife and fisheries, said. “The staff is deliberate in making the food as quickly but as well as they can. Of course, the food is top-notch.

Umm why can't his family send him any money? Or is he saying that the family was broke as well?

He was saying 80% were poor. Can't send what they don't have.

What a little snitch bitch! Can't stand loud mouths like him. Even though it's not talked about regularly, everyone knows it happens. We don't need YOUR loud mouth to clue us in on these "secrets" like its some kind of breaking news.

UT that's chump change man. 40-50K for 4 years work with those numbers?? Pay that man.

I'm pretty sure his statement is exaggerated, but I have no doubt that boosters, alum, etc. give starting players who need it "allowances" for spending money. I absolutely believe it's pretty much the norm at most universities. ... And I'm not totally opposed to the idea of some form of allowance for athletes; just don't know how it could be implemented strictly & fairly. I think that idea should be researched further.

I wish the NCAA would put UT through the same hell Fat Phil orchestrated for us. The Viles already skated on the Tee Martin case, Diane Sanford was a booster and they (NCAA) just said nothing to see here.
