Bingo
The NCAA has figured out a way to have a multibillion dollar industry without paying the labor.
Im no history buff, but we fought a war for the same reason once.

So what happened to his monthly housing stipend, food stipend and the free food UT provides for all of its athletes?
This smells of another conjured up story in hopes of creating sympathy for college scholarship athletes. What a load of crap.

What were we paying for his senior year? Fumbling away the game against UCLA?

Wow. Talk about inappropriate comparisons. That's way over the line, dude.

How do these football players manage to go out and get arrested at bars? I mean, if they are living off of handout tacos, surely they can't pay a $20 cover.

You've seriously lost it, if you're comparing this to slavery now.

These players think they have a right to play college football. They do not. If they can't afford to play they shouldn't play. There is a lot I can't afford to do and because of that, I don't.
I couldnt agree more. Well said sir.

Football players in college should not be paid. They get stipends already. They get to play a sport that most of us wish we could play for longer than 4 years and would give anything to play just one more time.
It's already corrupt as hell and most benefits currently aren't allowed so how currupt do think it'll get once we open the flood gates!!!??? Plus, we all know that there are 7 or 8 programs that have a shite ton more money than everyone else will dominate year in and year out (they already do, really). It will destroy competition. Schools get more exposure and survive financially because of espn, cbs and other avenues for their football programs. If the bama's, oklahoma's, ohio state's of the world buy up all the recruits like the New York Yankees, then these schools wouldn't just lose football programs, they would run the risk of closing their doors for good.
It's a bullshite idea.

It is absolutletly sick if you think that college athletes and the NCAA is comparable in any way to the horrors and evil of slavery.

why couldn't he eat at the cafeteria? i know the Bama players get specialized food provided to them by the football program, formulated for them by the staff nutritionist. does TN not feed their players?

I have mixed feelings on all of this. I am paralyzed by being able to see both sides.
But the fact that the NCAA gets rich off of these kids and has no qualms about doing it, and then tries to act high and mighty about "integrity" really pisses me off.

You're getting something FOR frickING FREE that costs normal people $10K+ per year plus free clothes and all the other perks that come with being a big time college athlete. Oh, and he's full of shite. Athletic scholarships have included meal plans since forever and there has always been free snacks and shite. Cry me a fricking river.
Jesus christ, this. Could you imagine if LSU paid Mathieu? What do you think he would have spent that money on?

First of all ROFL @ this happening during Fulmer's tenure at UT
Secondly this discussion on market value is giving this econ major AIDS. Look at the revenue brought in by the 85 guys on scholarship and look at the total amount of aid those 85 scholarships add up to. Athletes aren't getting anything close to fair market value. They put up with it because their situation still isn't horrible and they don't really have an option, but that doesn't mean they're fairly compensated.
And at you dipshits who didn't play football and think you deserve the same aid as those you do (and that football players who want more are whining/entitled/etc.). You don't bring in shite to the university. If you're my age (graduating from undergrad next spring semester) then you probably don't even pay the full value of your own education. These guys pay several times their expenses in the revenue they bring in. Schools like LSU that turn a profit in the athletic department thanks to football and have their athletic departments subsidize the rest of the campus are funding the facilities that even ALLOW non-athlete students to attend in the first place.
What do you bring the school? Ain't nobody out there that gives a flying frick about watching you study for your organic chem exam. No one gives a shite about your pretty little painting or your brilliant paper. I'm an econ major, no one wants to see my autistic-five-year-old-level drawing skills, graphs that mean nothing to more than a tiny sliver of the general population, or hear me talk about supply and demand. You don't bring in any revenue that makes a difference with your work in academics. It's important, and damn good on you for getting an education, but until a tenth of a million people turn out every Saturday for a third of the year to watch you do your thing, you are not equal to a football player and you don't deserve the same level of compensation.
ETA: I fricked up, 85, not 115
