As people are saying, this is very common. Also keep in mind that in smaller college towns, hotel accommodations are limited and lots of fans come to town for the games, taking up hotel rooms themselves while the local hotels jack up prices to take advantage of that.

well, to be fair; when a kid can't get in a good school like Georgia, they might be motivated to visit a place like Clemson, as it is a decent "backup school" if you can't get into your 1st choice

Oddly enough, the exception at A&M this year will be Alabama. Lord Saban has decided to stay in town at the Stella (located at Traditions Country Club).
Besides the distraction factor, the better hotels in most college towns would rather not have visiting teams, as it is less reliable business. They aren't going to get every team, but in towns like Oxford and Starkville, they can basically make folks sign up for a "season ticket," often requiring nonrefundable prepayment, 2 night minimums, and double their standard rate. Having some random road team spend one Friday night could screw all that up for a 75 room bloc (and there aren't any 200 room hotels in these towns).
