Someone I knew was getting a minor in baseball statistics.

Nope
I will be in a clear minority but I still believe the academic side is the reason a university exist
Don't care what foolish waste if academic program people throw out there. Someone is enrolled in it for whatever reason
This.
When an academic program is sacrificed to save an athletic program, the whole idea of colleges and universities has been destroyed.

I did a double major after the urging of my dad. I wanted to do just history. But ended up doing Civil Engineering and history. Thank God.

This is one thing I will put my foot down with my son. I just don't think I can pay for his college if he majors in something useless in terms of making money post college. It's going to take a pretty big sales job on his part to justify majoring in history or some liberal arts degree.

You can pooh-pooh the difficulty of an engineering degree all you want. It won't matter to me because I know the truth. There's no way a "trade school" would give me the same education.
And you're still an idiot.

On the contrary, I think an ENGR degree is very difficult to obtain. The core concepts are generally more difficult to grasp and the competition for a degree that guarantees a job is fierce.
And making ENGR schools trade schools likely WOULD give you a better education (try not to think of trade school as "sub-college," but as a school devoted to your craft). No more core courses in ENGL and foreign languages, more hands on learning... you'd have a smaller, more flexible school that is responsive to the needs of its students. Plus, ENGR is one of the few degrees that could become a trade school b/c you could generate enough revenue to support it.
But I definitely don't see ENGR'ing programs as contributing to the old school academic missions of most universities. We accept that now, of course, but traditionally many of the programs people are in here in favor of cutting are the ones that define a university (along w/ medicine, law and divinity).

History can be very rewarding if you go into academia. Otherwise it can be a stuggle, unless you find a nice national park job.

Law School... we have enough attorneys

Are you advocating that engineering being dropped? WTF? That's a lot of research dollars for any university.

The mad scramble for research dollars is killing universities. The benefit to the student (you know, the guy paying to be educated) is so small as to be unidentifiable.

It has the quickest return on investment of any degree you can obtain.

Education has never been a strictly economic bargain. That fits very much in line w/ trade schools, though.

Thanks for clarifying, and maybe you're only a partial idiot... remains to be seen. I think there may be differences between schools and that's where our disconnect is. I took as many English classes as my History/German major roommate. Chemistry courses (which about killed me) and a couple of Logic courses that scofflaw didn't take, and lots of Calculus that he of course never came near and aren't specifically engineering courses. Obviously I didn't take as many history courses, but there were more than a couple. Short version, I got the college education you think I should have. As far as I know.
I'd also take issue with a day school sort of trade program providing the same education, even throwing out the English, etc. In my experience it was very competitive, and I can't see getting that same education from the University of Phoenix or whatever. My big wakeup call came in my senior year: I did pretty well on the SAT. By my senior year the incoming engineering freshmen had a higher average SAT score than I did. The average engineering student at A&M does not graduate with an engineering degree. So I tried harder :-)

Tons of academic programs I would sacrifice if it meant keeping the football team. Basically any program that earning a degree in could result in a job as a barista is on the chopping block.

The STEM complex is going to be absolutely amazing at Alabama. I wish I would have had the benefit of it.
