Talent level is down at LB and DB. Has been for a while. UGA, FSU, Auburn and Bama all seem to recruit the same areas. Early in Sabans tenure these schools were not a threat in recruiting.

Also since Mario Cristobal has been on the staff the Oline has been very avg to below avg. Bama has not been able to run the ball effectively and has had lots of 3 and outs.

When McElwain was the OC the offense complimented the defense perfectly.

Exactly. At what point in the earlier days did we have to play someone so soon after coming off of a serious injury?

Funky, do you think the corners this year were anywhere near what we've had?

The only thing that concerns me is that with the elite level of players recruited that more and more are leaving early for the pros (something lsu fans can realte) this will lave areas in the defense that at times will be inexperienced. Everyone has this problem to an extent, but with the style of play Bama must have CBs that can play m2m and need very good safeties. The problem this past year is lack of the talent necessary to run Sabans defense to its fullest potential.

This has been addressed with last year's and this year's classes. Hopefully, they can learn the D and become that dominant D.

And Sylve is a bad example because you are comparing all Americans to someone who has been a backup his whole college career.

Which I believe was his whole point, sylve was a starters or played a lot this year. So we have to compare him to those other players. That shows the lack of talent we had this year vs the previous years.

All it takes is a few players leaving early and a few misses on recruiting and you will have a year or two where the talent isn't up to the high standard at that position.

has Bama's defense dropped off since 2012?

No, Alabama still has one of the best defenses in the country every single year. Offenses are just better and harder to defend these days. Everybody's defense gets torched some.

The defense only allowed 35 against Ohio state. Edit this now!!

I think the fct that the refs have decided to quit calling any offensive holding is the main reason college scores are up.

Rewatch the OSU game and you will get it. Lesser teams now just tackle the defense.

I see what you are saying, and I do think that Jones was definitely up to par.

I reckon I agree with your point for the most part.

The answer to the questions is yes compared with the defenses in the years mentioned we have dropped off, of course you are comparing to some of the best defenses of all time. But as compared to the rest of college football, not as much as we are still one of the best defensive programs in the country.

It isn't so much the kinder, gentler approach as personnel. To go from guys like Javi, Menzie, Dre K., Milliner etc. to Eddie Jackson and Sylve is a huge drop off.

Not really. The problem has always been there, but the SEC failed to produce QBs that could take advantage of that weakness. For the most part, Bama's loses have come from QBs that could exploit that weakness.

I buy this, and would be my answer if I were a Bama fan. But we all know that perception is reality, and if the perception is that Saban has gone soft I can't see that sitting well with some Bama (or any Big 6 if it were their coach) fans.

Better CB play and overall tackling would do wonders for Bama's defensive woes.

The thing that struck me in the Ohio State game was the lack of a pass rush, especially on 3rd down. It seemed like Jones had all day to pass, which I believe led to the db's looking worse than they should have. That being said, Alabama's corners this year didn't seem up to their usual standards.

I don't think I've ever seen Jackson NOT get burnt. He was born with burnt tattooed on his football brain.

Not at all. It's not a scheme issue. It's fundamentals on the backend. It can be fixed.
