Appalachian State went 10-3 last season, finishing 42nd in the final F+ Rankings by Bill Connelly. They got hammered early by Clemson 41-10 and then lost to Arkansas State 40-27. They beat Ohio in the Camellia Bowl. They return 5 on offense (including RB, QB) and 9 on defense (including 6 of their front 7).

Any chance Appalachian State gives Tennessee a battle for 3 quarters or are the Vols too good and too deep?

The line is Tennessee -24, Connelly has the margin at -16.8.

VOLS have no excuse not to beat this team by 24+ points imo. If Tennessee is truly a potential championship squad like many think, we should throttle a team like Appy State in game 1. I could understand if it were a trap game sandwiched in between SEC opponents.

I think UTk is fully aware of the hype train and will come to kick the in the nuts. Blowout by halftime.

I think Applachian State will keep it too close for comfort for about 3 quarters, but our talent advantage shows during the 4th and we win by 3 TD's

They have a good squad like Bowling Green last year and Utah St. with Chuckie Keeton the year before them, but we should handle them by 21+

While I would love nothing more than an App St upset of Tennessee to kick off a 2007-esque comedy of errors, I doubt it happens.

Vols dick around in the first half to the tune of a 1 touchdown lead and then blow the doors off in the second half.

Backups should get a quarter at least.

Tennessee opened its 1998 championship season with a one point win versus Syracuse

Well, as we all know, Applachian State is Hot, Hot, Hot. Unless that song lied.

Close at first and then a blowout. This isn't the high flying club that stunned Michigan, they are more of a run oriented team and while they can beat up on teams at their level I don't think they have the firepower to hang with the Vols.

A close win, while not a disaster for the Vols, would be cause for concern.

Syracuse was a good team back then. That particular team was QB'd by some guy named McNabb.

CSB. That was a very good Syracuse team led by Donovan McNabb and they won the Big East that year iirc.

This is about what we did against a good mid major team (Bowling Green) last year to open up the season.

Also there will be a ton of threads on tScoreBoard shitting on us if it's still close at halftime, just like there were last year.

IMO it's 21-13 at half and 52-20 final.
