The person I know that has it is being affected physically and mentally at close to the same pace.

Still can recognize close friends and family but is starting to struggle to walk from the bed to the couch.

I think it affects people differently.

With another friend's mom it seemed to affect her mind much quicker than her body.

Seems to be more common than in the past, maybe because people are living longer.

A very similar ailment killed Terry Pratchett not that long ago. He had planned, as he put it, "to take this with me", a not very veiled hint he was planning to kill himself though in the end he died in his sleep.

What horrible fricking thing to happen to someone.

This is a disease we MUST make progress on and soon...it robs you of your dignity indeed of what makes you you. It has to be beaten and the sooner the better,

With Alzheimer's, the earlier you get it the more rapidly it progresses. Those with early onset as Pat had have genetic predispositions which also lend to increased severity and progression.

I've seen people go from forgetting where they put their keys to literally not being able to dress themselves in just 2-3 years.

A friend's dad was diagnosed in his mid-50s back in 2012. 3.5 years later he cant so much as open a door without help and thinks his sons are old high school friends.

That seems incredibly young to be diagnosed with Alzheimers and have it be that severe. Wow.

It is but early onset Alzheimer's is the worst. The younger you are the faster your decline. Pat was pretty young when dx'd and it scares me to think about how quickly it's progressing.

I honestly miss her as coach. There was something about seeing her courtside and the intensity, passion, and humility. What she did for women's basketball cannot be overstated.
