There are stories of people swimming for hours in the open ocean, yet a college athlete couldn't float long enough to save his life?

It doesn't really make sense. 15 feet from shore?

Was he wasted? Maybe ridiculous cramps?

I'm asking an honest question. None of it makes sense to me.

Rip tides are deceptively dangerous

I suppose that maybe it comes off that way, but that's not what I'm trying to do.

Maybe the friends mistook agony on the guys face for smiling and he was really so cramped up that he couldn't stay above water?

Legitimate question, imo. I've grown up going to the lake but will now have a life jacket near me at all times. Very eerie situation

Rob Conrad swims for several hours after falling out of his boat

Here's a guy that might have been in similar shape, swimming in the ocean, which was likely far more difficult, but made it to safety.
