He's not a horrible coach, but just going to the NIT every year is not satisfying. I'd rather take a chance and end up with a horrible coach than just be NIT-bound for eternity.

+1

And I only had CJJ about third choice of possibles when he was hired. But, he is an absolute homerun hire, back home doing the best work of his life. JJ is the best hire LSU could've made not named Pitino or Calipari or Izzo or Donovan, in terms of LSU's needs.

LSU Hoops headed back to major glory days very soon!

Came here to post the exact same thing but I think that was the 01-02 campaign.

That was also a joke. We lost our first game as #1 and ended up a #10 seed in the NCAA tournament and lost in the first round.

I was browsing through Gottfried's history and it says that they held that #1 spot for two weeks before dropping a game to Utah. Not that it really matters

They've lost every close game they've been in this season. Alabama isn't a bad team this season, and they'll do pretty well in SEC play probably, but it'll be almost impossible for them to make the NCAAT with all of their losses in non-conference play. Seems like they're NIT bound again.

I'm not sure that'll be enough to get him fired. He has a pretty good recruiting class coming in next season, and that may or may not have bought him another season. I don't think he's a bad coach, but he's definitely not a great one, either. Alabama can definitely do better, but they could also definitely do worse.

Should be interesting what happens with him this offseason. If Alabama does well in SEC like I think they will, I think he'll get 2014-15, but it would go either way. I'd definitely want him fired at this point if I were a Bama fan.
.................................................

A pretty good accessment. He's clueless on the offensive end, and he doesn't/hasn't had a descent big man since Jamichal Greene, and he inherited him. I suspect the new NCAA rules regarding hand checking may do him in because hard defense is his only strong point...we CAN do better than him...and he's making 2 mil. a year.

It really is hard to believe that Mark Gottfried took that program to #1 in the nation just 10 years ago.

I know Bama fans don't like Gottfried, were glad he left, and don't want him back, but I think they would be better had they kept him than they are now.

I was a Grant fan for the first two years. But, I've been ready for a change for a while now. He's a terrible offensive coach, and he can't put together the right mix of talent.

Yes

Gottfried left us in a terrible shape roster wise and state of the program. Unfortunately, Grant hasn't changed that much, but I don't think anything would be better now had we just let Gottfried hang around.

He's more like the Mike Shula of Alabama basketball.

Was the first week during finals when we didn't play any games? The first game we played as #1 was Utah, and we lost.

We wouldn't be any better if we had Gottfried. The players hated him and were glad to see him go.

I want Bruce Pearl but most Bama fans are on some high moral ground and are against it.

I know he was down at the time of firing, but he always recruited pretty well and found a way to get teams to the tourney. Bama fans were understandably ready to take the next step because the program was stalled, but Bama took a step back instead of a step forward. That is always a risk and maybe it was one worth taking. I have just long thought Gottfried got a bit of a raw deal. He was great and likely never will be, but he was pretty good.

Ditto.

Heck, I'd just as soon lose every basketball game if it meant a natty in football.

He's the Bobby Petrino of college basketball -- good coach with baggage who'll never get an SEC gig again.
