Obviously Saban is a good coach and good recruiter
However you're trying to paint it like it's 100% due to his skill, which obviously isn't the case. It's not entirely the other coach's fault (assuming he's not at LSU or Florida) that he has a musket - that's the hand that program is playing. There is a range of recruiting success that's possible at any given school - a good coach will be able to recruit at the top of that range, but he can't go past it. Let's say Alabama hired Rich Rod and Saban after leaving Miami goes to Kentucky. Even with the boost from his success at LSU, he still wouldn't pull in top 15, or even top 20 classes consistently. They'd probably average 8 or 9 wins a year, occasionally 10 wins. That's how it works.

I would much rather have a musket than a howitzer in a war. Mobility wins every time.

I disagree. A great coach will elevate a program to that level. Witness what Bryant did at Kentucky and what Saban did at LSU. Ditto Urban Meyer at Utah. Neither were great when they got there but all were great when they left.
Your theory is valid to a point, but certain coaches can break the glass ceiling for a program. I think you could put Urban Meyer or Saban at Rice and in 5-6 years, they'd be consistently winning their conference and 9-10 games a year. Give them a decade and Rice would have a puncher's chance at the playoffs.

Had Saban been hired at Ky in 2007 with the President and AD bought in to the process they would be a power in the SEC today.
Kids want to play for the best. He is the best.

Bama football is like a well oiled machine these days, but The Machine was there long before Saban.
