The 1980s saw, for the first time, the emergence of truly elite athletes like Herschel and Bo. These guys would be able to step on the field today and be just as dominant as they were back then.

The 1980s also witnessed the emergence of elite athletic teams like Miami. A team like 1986-89 Miami would probably beat the best teams in CFB today.

Sure, Bo and Hershel could play today, but those teams would get smoked by today's teams.

You mentioned 1986 Miami. This is their starting OL:

254
246
258
281
247

Compared to last year's FSU:

300
330
322
320
315

No way that Miami team hangs with 2013 FSU.

You have a good point about the up-sized athletes. They are more elite today.

But the skilled position guys were there.

If you measure/compare 'em straight up, you're right. But if you take those same '86 Miami players and bring 'em up in today's game, they're probably going to weigh similar to the FSU line...and vice versa if FSU's players were around back in the '80s. That's why it's so difficult to compare teams among different eras...

i start in 1947, post ww2 because a lot of programs stopped playing "big time" cfb, plus recruiting became a bit different as far as pay, etc. also, army and nd teams from ww2 (also aTm) where full of guys trying to get out of going to war and had their rosters stocked with draft dodgers, aTm tried to curb this by putting out inferior officers with brief training programs. "military college" during the war years is always associated with entitled, connected kids who could get out of the war or put it off and they all stockpiled the talent from around the country. theres nothing patriotic about army and its bull shite draft dodging nattys from the 40s.

Apparently you are ignorant of the fact that enrolling in a college ROTC program allowed males to avoid being drafted into the military from 1940 to 1973.

Think Bill Clinton (and Rick Perry).

Modern Football-

Either

Post 1967- Integration changed everything and this is when the SEC first had African-American players play.

Post-1973- Scholarship limits come out and actually bring football into the modern era, programs actually have to compete and one team can't just sign players to keep them away from others even though they have no intention of ever letting them play.

Or 1992 (First SEC Championship game)

or 1997 First BCS Title game- no more purely poll decided titles.

Or Georgia coach Wally Butts getting waivers during WW2.

But the skill position players wouldn't be able to do their thing if the linemen they're running behind are twice as small as the linemen that are trying to tackle them.

1986 Miami would be destroyed by 2013 Florida State.

This. 1970 seems like a good year to start.

Collegiate athletic segregation outside of the South ended decades before that fwiw.

College football has evolved a lot.

Prior to 1908 the rules weren't even standardized.

Prior to mid 1920's there was no concept of a "national champion"

Prior to 1936 there were no polls.

Prior to the late 1950's there was no 2 point conversion.

Prior to the mid/late 60/70's there was segregation, freshman couldn't play, and poll titles were awarded before bowl games.

Prior to the late 1980's kickers got to kick off a tee.

Prior to 1992 there were no conference championship games or official national championship games.

Prior to 1996 there was no overtime.

Prior to 2005 there was no instant replay.

And prior to 2014 there was no multi-level playoff.

So yeah, the game's evolved a lot.
