Oh I know how it worked back then. I took a class on the history of southern football this year ...plus I already knew.

Someone mentioned on the radio today that ESPN showed Alabama with only 8 NCs. Why does Alabama claim 13?
Who really gives a frick on how many Bama claims, all I care about is LSU raising the Crystal consistently.

Just agreeing with you and pointing out to the others the facts.

Some people want to judge the way things were done in the past with the way it's done today.

Forget all the made up awards and just go by undefeated seasons that way no one can argue. Facts are Facts

Alabama 12 undefeated seasons
Auburn 12 undefeated seasons

We have 18 but don't want to be arrogant so we reduced it to 13.

There were no "services" naming champions at the time. It was all a bunch of geeks with computers crunching numbers after the fact. There was no "champion" before 1936.

Newspapers across the country declared the winner of the game to be a 'champion'

The Bryant museum has quite the collection. I'll see if I can look them up.

1) This is not why Bama claims the pre-1936 titles. They claim them because of the retroactive stats guys, which is pretty stupid in my book.

2) Yeah, so you had a bunch of local newspapers each naming the closest good team the "champion." It was chaotic and unorganized. In any given year, there were probably four or five "champions."

That doesn't mean there was such a thing called "the national championship."

THAT thing didn't exist until 1936, the first year the AP poll organized a systematic vote of media on who the champion would be. This move was done to address the chaos described above.

Hence, claiming any "national title" before 1936 is pretty dumb, IMHO.

And if by "the game" you mean The Rose Bowl, you are wrong.

That is Bama revisionism right there. The Rose Bowl didn't always even feature the best team from the Pacific Coast Conference. It was certainly not a championship game by any stretch of the imagination.

How can I be wrong? I've seen the papers. Specifically, they called the winner the 'gridiron' champion

Oh, and if I remember correctly, every team that went undefeated and won the Rose Bowl pre-AP era claims a title for that year. Not just Alabama, so

Not even cose to accurate.

USC has half a dozen or so Rose Bowl wins from the 20's and 30's. Washington State, Oregon, Great Lakes, Mare Island, Cal, Stanford, Georgia Tech, etc all have Rose bowl wins from those decades they do not claim as well. Bama is more likely about the only team that does this.

My list does not include any seasons where Auburn only played 2 games but it does include a season where alabama only played 1 game. (1897 Alabama 1–0–0) now that is what I call a champion.
If you take that season out then I guess Auburn has 1 more undefeated season than bama.

Only a barner would think this way. You know some years there were no undefeated teams. Other years there were more than 1. Don't worry though we all know you have 2 NC's. The first one you were bowl banned having been the first team to be officially sanctioned for cheating but who cares right? The second...
