I understand, but Bama's retroactive claims are not true NCs. Bama was not the most deserving team in some of those years. Along with other years in the 60's and 70's that bama claims.

Bama has 6 titles where they were the most deserving team in the country according to billingsly.

Other Notables

Notre Dame: 11
OU: 7
USC: 6
Michigan: 6
Nebraska: 5
Miami:4
AU: 4
LSU: 3
UF: 3
UT: 3

You keep using the word "claim". The AP or UPI/Coaches' awarded those titles in 1961, 1964, 1965, 1973, 1978, and 1979.

Here you go. 1913 AU. First southern team to ever win a NC.

quote:

The 1913 Auburn Tigers football team represented Auburn University in the 1913 college football season. The team was coached by Mike Donahue and was undefeated at 8–0, outscoring opponents 224–13. Auburn, led by senior captain Kirk Newell, was the champion of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

The Tigers were retroactively awarded a national title by several computer rating systems
, including the College Football Research Center which is a component of the BCS, the current system to determine the national champion).[1]

I use claim because I personally do not believe bama should claim a title in years they did not deserve it according to results on the field, even though some dumbass may award it.

How can you tear down what a poll title awards in one season and accept it in another season? That's woefully inconsistent.

A win on the 9th will make 9 poll titles, which will move Bama ahead of ND for the most all time.

No matter how you choose to count, Bama always comes out looking good.

Well, first of all, that is not what I am doing. And if I was there might be grounds for it considering the fact polls have evolved. But since I am not doing that it doesn't matter.

What I am saying is the Billingsly component of the BCS has always been pretty accurate. And they went back and determined NCs through the years. I personally believe that is a more accurate representation of who the true NC was for a given year than a poll that awarded the NC before the bowls for a long time or some geologist sitting in his lab beating off and pulling shite out of his arse.

Maybe they do. Sewanee used to whip some arse.

Here is some more info on 1913 AU:

quote:

Their Hall of Fame coach was Yale grad Mike Donahue (pictured), who went 105-35-5 at Auburn 1904-1906 and 1908-1922. They were champions of the South in 1913 and 1919 (splitting the last with Alabama). Dan McGugin started coaching at Vanderbilt the same year Donahue started at Auburn, and Vandy had easily dominated the South 1904-1912, with Sewanee 2nd and Auburn 3rd during that time. Auburn overtook Vanderbilt and Sewanee this season, but their stay at the top of the South was just 2 years, as Georgia Tech dethroned them in 1915 and outplayed them for years thereafter.

As you can see, 6 of their 8 opponents had winning records, 2 lost only to Auburn, and the last 5 teams they played were a combined 30-9-3, 30-4-3 when not playing Auburn, and 29-3-1 when not playing Auburn or each other. That's pretty impressive, and it's why some computer programs like Auburn as #1 for 1913. And Auburn performed strongly against that schedule, winning just one game by a touchdown or less (7-0 over LSU).

Someone mentioned on the radio today that ESPN showed Alabama with only 8 NCs. Why does Alabama claim 13?

8, 13, 27...who cares? Use it for your entertainment purposes.

Like saying, "Hey, where's Bama ranked by Houlgate this year?" "You don't know? It's fourth, but I guess they knew more about football in the 30s."

Or "1941. Explain the 19 position jump from #20 to a NC after 1 game again."

Or in response to the typical slam on LSU's 2003 split with USC "How many outright championships did the beloved Bear win because we know everything before then was split?"

Finish with "What's your record against LSU and Auburn this century?"

Not really.

AU has 4 legit NCs according to major computer ratings including one that makes up the BCS formula.
