It's the '41 Houlgate poll that's the lie. It was actually awarded to Minnesota at the time. Somehow after a period of time changed into Alabama as the winner

While I knew the AP had Minnesota #1 in '41 (and deservedly so), I never knew the initial Houlgate rating also had Minnesota #1. I wonder why it changed over time...doesn't make any sense. But even at #3, Houlgate's initial rating had us way too high that year. Claiming the '41 title is an embarrassment and should be dropped...don't see it happening though...

That being said, 1964 is ours. Sorry, Hogs. Take it up with the AP and UPI.

I make it simple by just counting titles since newspaper pollsters, that is AP and/or UPI, started counting them in 1936. So Alabama has 10, which is still more than anybody else.

It's 11

Fair enough. It's great to be the only program that has so many national titles that people can't agree on how many there are. It's great to win so much that rivals actually try to tease you about losing in the last second of the championship game. It's great to have a team so dominant that other fans have to come up with non-football related criticisms, like "your fans didn't attend the school" or "you care too much about football - it's your life".

In short, it's a great time to be a Bama fan.

The AP and UP NC was awarded before the bowl games back then. It pissed some people off that we lost the bowl game that year so they changed the AP NC award in 1965 to be made after the bowls. Of course we were #4 before the Orange Bowl in 1965 where we beat Nebraska to win the NC that year. We do whatever it takes. You can't make this stuff up.

You can have your shiny 1964 FWAA trophy.

Alabama will keep the 1964 AP and UPI trophies.

Deal?

it's actually the final 1941 rating FWIW.

Theories are just bad fact checking from a sports journal in the 60's. Fact is, in 1941 Houlgate was basically just a column in a few west coast newspapers. His popularity comes from his work after these particular polls. These early polls only gained "credibility" by association because of later work.

His ranking was SOS rankings, during this period FWIW

Sitting at #20 in the nation

Vandy bitches!

#3 Alabama
#6 State
#11 Tennessee
#13 Georgia
#17 (tie) Missouri
#17 (tie) Texas A&M
#20 Vanderbilt

7 in the current SEC in the Top 20, the more things change, the more they stay the same.

See Bama. This is what happens when you lose to Clemson with one second left. They all come out of the woodwork

Deke Houlgate revised his formula later on and put more of an emphasis on SOS.
Y'all should always claim it because other SEC programs are guilty of the same thing and it pisses so many people off.

Doesn't really matter. Bama shares 1964 with Arkansas, just like LSU shares 1958 with Iowa and Auburn shares 1957 with Ohio State.

Arkansas, Iowa & Ohio State all won the FWAA in the years that Bama, LSU & Auburn won the AP.
