Let me guess... You disagree that modern day college football started in the 90's and 2000's...?
(and you're the one laughing at me??)

I've always felt it started when every program in the country was integrated. So by the late 1970s?

You said it started around the year 2000 which is why he is laughing.
Anyway, back to baseball. I predict an increase in fan support when the Joe undergoes some much needed renovations. I went to the game after A-Day with my dad who was in town, and the baseball stadium really isn't very nice. If the fan experience was better, I bet there would be more support.

that was huge as well, no question
the major things IMO that "changed" college football into what it is today:
-integration
-scholarhsip restrictions
-BoalCoalition/BCS
-TV exposure and $$$

There's an argument for the late 70s with integration being fully cycled through. There's an argument for the start of the Bowl Coalition in 1992. There's an argument for the BCS era starting in 1998. And there will be an argument for 2014 with the "playoff".

They are nowhere near the best fanbase.
If it weren't for football they would be on the same level as Vanderbilt. Their best comparison is Kentucky. Both only get up for one sport. But they been the best recently so you can't fault them.

Don't be "that" poster.

We definitely get up for Basketball and Gymnastics (not to the same level as football obviously). Gymnastics because we have been really good, and the University has done a great job of making the meets very enjoyable to go to. Our basketball team isn't even that good, but people definitely still support it.
I would argue Alabama baseball support is similar to LSU basketball support. Both are not particularly well attended, but there is some excitement around the program from the more die-hards because of young players who look promising.

I remember when the forward pass was invented, everybody wanted to wipe out all those great years we had prior! I didn't fight thru WWI for all that!

I think most people would say modern day college football started right around that period with the scholarship restrictions, SEC expansion, SECCG, etc
Meh, I'd say when southern teams started letting black dudes play.

I disagree only because Southern teams were still winning national championship with all white teams. Integration was huge no doubt, but I think the events around 1992 were equally as big in forming modern day college football.

Well you better find the nearest news station. You're the oldest living American World War I veteran.

Integration and the wishbone are massive occurrences in Alabama football. I don't think it is very coincidental that Alabama's average seasons in 1969 and 1970, were followed by both integration and the switch to the wishbone in 1971. ( I realize we actually integrated in 1970, but Wilbur Jackson wasn't eligible under freshmen rules of the era).

I guess my argument is that integration started a new era and the events around 1992 started another new era (the modern one). Specifically what the SECCG did for the SEC, what the Bowl Coalition did in creating a NCG, and how scholarship limits leveled the playing field across college football.

Oh, I agree. This was just all started by someone flaming a LSU fan about them not having success until 2000. Which is incorrect. They were a Top 15 All-Time program through the 1980s. Their awful decade of the 1990s is what made some people forget that.
