Bama fans are saying he is an upgrade over Chavis as a coach? He is not a terrible coach, but based his record as a Coordinator and HC I dont want hi running my teams defense. He is a better coach than Lance Thompson.
I would even say he is average or slightly below as a position coach.

Other than recruiting he is just a blah coach and hire.

Unlike most people on the rant, I don't know how good he is, or how much you can attribute the success and/or lack of it to Steele instead of Smart or Saban. What we all know is that he has a great deal of experience and he has been coaching recently under a very successful head coach who is very hands-on.

I think most were anticipating him moving back into the DC role once Kirby found a head coaching gig.

No idea where he came up with that shite.

It's obvious that Coach Saban thinks a whole lot of the man to hire him twice.

Saban's hired plenty of coaches multiple times. If they fill a void they fill a void.

As far as recruiting goes - I'm not sure there's another defensive coordinator in America that is better at recruiting.

By all accounts he's a really good recruiter. But let's be real. No one came to Alabama because of Steele. They signed with Alabama because of Alabama and Saban.

I don't think anyone is saying this. They shouldn't be, at least. He is definitely an upgrade as a recruiting defensive coordinator, though.

Read edits, I made a mistake with the quote button.

You basically hired a recruiter to run your defense.

If you have NFL talent, it makes it a lot easier.

He's a really good recruiter and a really average defensive coordinator.

I thought LSU has been saying it was loaded with talent already though?

Yea, this celebration about finally being able to sign NFL type players from LSU people took me by surprise.

Is this a real sentiment or a coping mechanism? Honest question.

How did you feel when you first heard about the hire? Go with your first instinct.

I think we have had top 5/10 recruiting classes and now we are expecting top 5 every year IMO.

We have not recruited DL or LB well this year. Also, we lose several players a year out of Louisiana (Landon, Cam, Speedy, etc.). Adding two recruiters, most notably Orgeron, will really solidify a fence around the state. He is a monster recruiter, especially in Louisiana.

I think he's a below average/average DC. However, I think the staff around him, Les Miles, our TOP controlling offense, talent, etc. will keep us in the top 20 on defense.

We aren't going to have top 5 defenses anymore with him, but we'll be more exciting, force more turnovers, and we won't lose too many games IMO.

Well we are. That is not debatable.

We will just be more loaded now

NFLU just became NFLU with worse coaching. But hey, I'm happy if they're happy.

It just depends on what positions we're talking about. We've had great talent in our defensive backfield for a long time, but we've been pretty soft up front for three years. Our rushing defense has been getting gashed lately. Not much pressure from the DE's. Small LB's who have trouble getting off of blocks. Lots of speed, but we've been getting pushed around up front.

I think Chavis made a few changes at LB by replacing Welter with Beckwith, and that made a big difference. When our freshman DL, Godchaux, finally figured things out, we got better. We still didn't have any pass rush, and teams that committed to the run pretty much had their way with us.

I think Coach O will help solidify the front, and Coach Raymond will keep us where we've been with DB's. If Steele can drive the car and keep it out of the ditch, I think we'll be fine. I'm really pretty good with the Defensive staff.

As a football fan, this sounds depressing as hell me.

I've always heard that Steele is a great individual - outside of football and with his players. He used to do a lot of speeches, as well as talk to church groups. He is obviously a very good recruiter too. So motivation is his #1 competency.

Coaching is probably the least he does to motivate kids, but he is nowhere near terrible. He is a durable coach.

You guys all know Steele and Chavis are best friends, right? I don't mean like professionally, I mean their families are best friends. They vacation together and stuff.
