I think alot of that has to do with the fact that the only way Saban can pretty much be let go is if they go on probation for recruiting violations. I remember Finebaum mentioning that a few years ago. So its probably Saban covering his arse as well.

Sure, but whatever happened was something that self-reporting wouldn't have helped much, or they would have just done that. Whatever it is is enough that they skipped all normal procedures for dealing with the regular infractions and immediately distanced themselves.
Now, it could very well be a bump rule think like Joker or it could be worse. Nobody knows yet.
