I was 8 years old. I do remember the Hogs crushing #1 Oklahoma in the Orange bowl 31-6 in Lou Holtz's first year though.

That's true, but it's still better than playing FCS schools like everyone does today.

Miami almost became an FCS school in the 70s, its amazing what a little donor money can do for a program

I think it was 99%. Most I think weren't born until the turn of the century based upon postings I read daily.

Here is a list of independent schools back in 77 who are power 5 schools now. Most of this list was still independent in 1990.

Notre Dame
Penn St.
FSU
Pitt
Rutgers
Louisville
G Tech
W. Virginia
S. Carolina
Miami
Va Tech

I'm in that group too. I'm a bit younger, but not a lot.

I was 36.

UK had a heckuva RB named Sonny Collins that year. He later got in some kind of trouble as I remember.

I was 10 and remember the USC game very well as well and the Cornhusker loss. USC was number one at the time. We had lost the NC game to Nebraska in 71, lost the 77 regular season game but laid it on them in 78 20-3 en route to the NC. Osborne still says that 78 game was one his most humbling losses because Nebraska got out-hit which NEVER happened.

I'm not sure I'd want a schedule like that these days. It would be nearly impossible to make it through and be in the discussion for the playoff. Nobody's going to take that chance anymore.

22 for me. As I recall UK was on probation, the joke then was the basketball team got caught doing things so the NCAA put the football team on probation. Sonny Collins was a bad fellow. I believe Art Still played on that team as well.

I was 5 and in kindergarten. I don't have any recollection of 1977. 1978 is the first year I can remember watching or attending sporting events.
