Watching the 1988 LSU/TAMU game. I never knew Kyle Field had a track. When did it get covered?

99 when they put in the north endzone and ditched the horseshoe.

Don't know what year they got rid of it but until the most recent renovation you could still kinda see the old track outline.

You can see where it was.

You can also see the worst seats in football. We stuck our visitors there.

That was my senior year and the track was still there.

They got rid of the track in 2014.

They didn't move the sidelines in until 2014, but the track was covered by the zone in the north and bleachers in the south.

It was covered with a different material years before as well.

When the latest renovation were complete, the field was lowered and much of the space that used to be the track were filled in with seats.

Field looks a lot better without the track. When was grass put in?

Sometime in the 90s.

The company that made Astroturf went out of business just before ours needed to be replaced and those new pellet fields were still too new, so we went back to natural turf.

I don't miss the fake stuff. That old stuff was like concrete. Rain games were fun because you could see guys slide for 10 yds if they fell right.

You'd be surprised how many other SEC stadiums originally had a track:

LSU
Arkansas
Ole Miss
MSU
Auburn
Missouri
Tennessee

Reminds me of the rain scene in Necessary Roughness when they tie KU with the Kathy Ireland field goal

The reason A&M's persisted so long was that we built a permanent 32,000 seat horseshoe around the track in the late 20s. Most of those other schools started out with smaller stadiums that only had sideline seating, and ended up doing away with the track when they constructed permanent endzone seating mid-century. A&M first considered getting rid of the track in the '60s, but did two major expansions ('67 and '79) without touching the track, before finally rebuilding the north endzone in '99, and removing all traces of the track in the '14-'15 rebuilding.
