Chamberlains bayonet counter charge is absolutely unbelievable and arguably saved the war.

And to think he was riding the slopes of Aspen just a few years earlier.

Oh I wish I were in the land of cotton,
Old times there are not forgotten,
Look away, look away, look away, Dixieland.

In Dixieland where I was born,
Early on a frosty mornin',
Look away, look away, look away, Dixieland.

I wish I were in Dixie, away, away.
In Dixieland I'll take my stand, to live and die for Dixie.
Away, away, away down South in Dixie.

All that fighting so we can elect reality show retards as the President

What was the point of any of that. Other than the humanity of the skin color forced free labor trade I guess

There was rampant, blatant holding by the Union that the refs missed.

So now coming up on our nation's birthday we are supposed to celebrate traitors to the nation.

1. It's "you're"

2. No better spokesman for the Confederacy than Vice President Alexander Stephens.

"Our new government is founded upon exactly [this] idea; its foundations are laid, its corner-stone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery subordination to the superior race, is his natural and normal condition. This, our new government, is the first, in the history of the world, based upon this great physical, philosophical, and moral truth."

I sometimes reenact as the 5th Louisiana Fighting Tigers and participated in that reenactment some years ago! What a learning experience, what history. So much power in all those cannons, all those lines of muskets rolling at once. No sound but your captain, faintly, no more than 5-10 yards away but barely audible over the smell of gunpowder, pounding of cannons and your heart slamming in your chest, and the heat.

Specifically, when exactly was this picture taken? The 145th anniversary reenactment? One of the guys in my unit was born without an arm and has often been our flag guy. He often carries a pistol like that, and we were young about like that one-armed kid in the picture when we participated in the 145th. I think that's my buddy in your picture!

Also, vice president quote be damned. I have a CD with an interview with the last remaining civil war vet, a southerner from Virginia, taken in the early 1940's. When asked why they fought, he literally says recalls "very distinctly" that, at least for him and many others, it was "states' rights." Such a conflict is multifaceted, and people limiting it to one person's (or even a substantial number of people's) words trivializes the opinions of everyone else, the context, and everyone's struggles.

Geaux Tigers. Go SEC. Go 'Merica.

Many of the soldiers for the Confederacy were fighting for personal reasons other than slavery. But make no mistake, the political and ruling class of the South were all slaveowners who had a vested interest in the continuation of that institution. They pushed for secession to protect that institution.

I knew there was a reason why I didn't want Missouri to join the SEC. Now I know why.

You don't have to protect anything if.......1) It's already protected by the US Constitution(Article one, Section 9) and 2) The other side (the North) isn't trying to end it.

And the Texas Hoods Brigade of 1,250 troops lost 597 at Little Round Top, defending the Gettysburg tail hook.

Chamberlain's 20th Maine took advantage of Lee's bad decision of not claiming the high ground. Caused Hood and the Alabama units to fight uphill while the 20th Maine fired downhill.
US Army named Fort Hood in Texas after Hood's brigade leader John Bell Hood.

No argument from me on that point. Always about the money. I would note, though, how convenient it was for the north to conveniently take the high ground when their economic infrastructure wasn't so wholly dependent on the institution. But that's neither here nor there, I suppose. Point is, I think we'll both find that we're each a little bit right in this discussion.

Actually the North was knee deep into slavery. Slavery was financed by northern banks. People from the North were making a lot of money because of slavery.

Secession was the method the slavers chose to renounce their debt to northern bankers.
