No kidding. Antonio Coleman is probably the best defensive end from the SEC that nobody has ever heard of. He put up huge numbers for such an undersized guy. I would take him on this Auburn team in a heart beat.

He was a great coach, motivator, and even better person. Those players up at Iowa State will literally run through a wall for him. He coaches with a passion and really cares about his players. Definitely one of my favorite coaches, and I actually wouldn't have minded him getting the head coaching job here at Auburn.

I'm not sure why that matters...at all.

Well he's a defensive guy right? And his defense at Southern Miss was 113th in the country in scoring defense last year. He hasn't had any recent success, and your defense is already one of the worst in the league.

Plus Malzahn's style means your defense will be on the field a lot more. He's definitely got an uphill battle to make you guys competitive, and at his age we'll just have to wait and see if he has the energy for such a big job.

that would have been entertaining. Fire Chizik who came from Iowa State and hire Rhodes from Iowa State.

South Carolina ring a bell? He got that Defense into shape.

And Chizik was D coordinator at AU in 2004. You see how his defenses have managed while head coaching. Your point is, well pointless. We know he's a proven d coordinator.

He had defensive talent to work with at Carolina.

Alright, sounds like the same situation with Gene Chizik... Great defenses at Texas and Auburn while being a defensive coordinator, and then shite defenses at Iowa State and Auburn while being a head coach.

Yeah, you know, his defenses at South Carolina were damn good, actually.

Yes.

Not necessarily an uphill battle, as he has already stated that Auburn had more talent in place than South Carolina when he took over there, and he turned them around in year 1 and made massive improvement.

He's the same age as Nick Saban, bro.

List of 4/5 stars on Defense:

Adams
Lawson
Daniels
Bradley
Whitaker
Wright
Holsey
Therezie
Toney
McKinzy
Nero
Frost
Whitehead
Blackson
Owens
Carter
Sanders

I'm probably missing some but I think there's some talent in there.

Really? They were good, but never close to being on LSU or Alabama's level. Explain the 3 consecutive blowout losses to Arkansas in 2009-2011. It's just "funny" actually. In 2011, South Carolina came in 3rd in Total Defense, yet they couldn't stop Arkansas. Alabama and LSU shut Arkansas down. I know I'm comparing a good defense to two elite defenses, but the point remains that South Carolina hasn't done so well against great passing teams. I've been informed here that Auburn has lacked great secondary talent for a while. If Ellis Johnson's last few years at South Carolina were any indicator, you'd better have a damn good secondary coach or you'll get burned by the great passing attacks.

Does your QB switching to Safety help in 2013? How will the Tiger defense fare this year?

Well, he knows a thing or two about interceptions...

True, but I'm not sure he ever threw ball all the way to a safety.

Nope, no talent there. Stars don't mean anything, recruiting services wrong.

Who said anything about LSU or Alabama level? We said we're hopeful for a good defense.

Our Corners have apparently been impressive. :inb4AuburnQBsjoke:

And we've had one Safety that is pretty damn good.

Well I sort of intentionally forgot that one since he would just focus on that.

Paul Rhodes was great. Considering the talent he had on defense, I'd rank him ahead of Muschamp as far as Auburn DCs go. Back when Chizik was hired I said that Iowa State got the better deal.

It was very impressive. AU finished with a top 15 scoring D while having a scoring offense that finished 111th.

Agreed.

What may be more impressive, or more depressing for Auburn fans, is the sorry excuse for a defense that was fielded in the year after, in 2009. It was amazing how bad the defenses were under Gene Chizik, Ted Roof, and Brian Van Gorder.

Ellis always has a good run defense, but Auburn's problem is in the secondary. Doesn't matter if you can stop the run if teams can just pass at will.
