Boy I remember this well. During the early 80's they had come out of nowhere. When they signed Eric Dickerson and James it has raised some questions. Dickerson was headed to OU and James to Bama. Texas ok but not SMU. THey had stayed on SMU's back for years with Meyer as coach and later Bobby Collins. In 1986 they had formed the "repeat violator rule" which basically said if you got caught again in a five year period you could get the death penalty and SMU was caught again. I was a senior in high school, Feb 1987 and when it was announced it went though the school like wildfire that SMU was done. Nobody ever thought the death penalty would be handed out. Ole Miss won't get the death penalty because they are not under the repeat violator.

If Texas had been caught doing the exact same shite, nothing serious would have happened.

some dumb trivia, SMU's last game before the death penalty was a 41-0 loss to Arkansas.

and Ole Miss' last shut-out before the death penalty was a 30-0 loss to Arkansas.

The out-of-state Texas residents that attend ole miss are SMU rejects.

Destroying a program for doing what everyone else was doing was just? Penn State had a defensive coordinator molest little boys for decades, and they are rolling right along. You need Jesus.

Probably the most deserving and just thing the NCAA has ever done.

If you like a tough NCAA then you have to hate what happened to SMU. The fallout from the Death Penalty made the NCAA gunshy about even lesser penalties ever since.

I believe issues was that they DIDN'T pay him. He would have kept his mouth shut otherwise.

If you haven't seen the 30 for 30 on SMU it was really good. They had some board that was running the payments. After they were caught the first time they thought "well we will just keep paying the players we are already paying and then stop after that. We have a payroll to meet" Of course they got caught again.

No he's not. Everybody knows that Dickerson was not going to A&M. All that matters is that Dickerson did as he was told. He went anywhere but two certain schools, not to be named.

Nah, he has been pretty positive about us in his older age. Partially thanks to him we got the five star receiver RSJ a few years ago.

I like how everyone mentions SMU as the big cheaters yet nobody talks Texas or Coog High.

Coog High was just blatant and had their own guys rat them out twice. I guess Yoemann did have enough cash in the drawer after all.

Would you rather have an All American who got caught stealing or taking payments?

Tony Cherico was moving merchandise out of the back of the mall.

You had to love the SWC when 8 of the 9 were on probation. Rice just did not care enough to cheat I suppose, because they could have outbid a lot of people.

I need to add one more picture

THIS Motherfricker caused all the damn investigations because he wanted to earn more cash than all of the player payments combined
