no question I'd rather be consistently competitive. a mere one national title isn't worth it, and by the time the next season rolls around everyone has already moved on eyeing the current prize.

one national title simply isn't worth years of suck.

History has shown that if you're up near the top long enough eventually things will fall your way. Mack Brown, Vince Dooley, Bobby Bowden, etc all went a while before winning a title, but eventually things worked out.

Let's hypothetcially say Richt is here 20 more years. I would certainly think we'd get a title in the next 20 at SOME point, all while being consistently good. I would not want to win a title this year then retire in 30 years without ever having another 10 win season.

The OP is not talking about Auburn. Unless, that is, I have missed a few decades somewhere of a top 15 all-time program.

I can't imagine ever matching the feeling of watching Alabama dismantle Miami for the 1992 title. I have loved some Bama games since then, but after that game I truly felt that everything football related from that point would never surpass that. And while the current success is absolutely wonderful, there will never be another feeling like that.

Every true fan should have the pleasure of their team winning it at least once in his lifetime.

Frank Beamer.
VT has been to a bowl game 20 years in a row with Beamer but no Natty. That's not why I started this thread but it's an example that things won't eventually go your way.

Agreed. Nothing will ever top the 2010 season for me, no matter what happens. Watching the people in front of me dump Monopoly money as Cam took the victory knee is one of the greatest things I can ever imagine seeing. Then immediately walking out of the stadium, orange and blue sunset to our west, among hoards of silent Alabama fans and students leaving BD, heads hung low. College football doesn't get better than that folks.

You're right, I agree. However, imagine if starting in 93 you went through a period of being constantly average, mostly an 8-4 type program with no real success, no west titles, no SEC titles, no BCS games, and you STILL have 10 more years to go of it.

I'm sure it's impossible to imagine since bama has had such amazing success recently, but think about how long about 1992 seems to you. Would that feeling still be worth it if your program endured 30 years of the Shula era?

UGA has it rough, knowing they are in a hotbed of talent and for some inexplicable reason can't get over that hump and take it home. Having won it in 1980, you still have plenty of fans who remember the glory and want it again.

I think this national title argument is a perfect example of "tis better to have loved and lost..."

I'm not talking about UGA or 8-5 programs. I'm talking about NO BOWL GAMES, 5-7 at best. 25 years, a quarter century.
