Ignoring for a second the possibility that the thread title was for the benefit of my Bayou Bengal friends (love you Tigers!), consider the validity of the point.

While losing to La Tech and the like is more humiliating looking only at the record book, I personally have never watched a game that was more demoralizing than 2000 USM. That was not a horrible team - iirc they were ranked about 25th - but they were a second tier team that was NEVER IN JEOPARDY of losing to us throughout the game. I am a hopeless optimist when it comes to Bama coaches; I was disappointed when Perkins left, when Curry left, when Fran left, and I even wanted to give Shula more time when we cut him loose.

Speaking on behalf of the gumps who are loyal to the coach to a fault, I have never witnessed a game that more clearly convinced EVERYBODY that Dubose was a failure. I think Dubose's own mother was probably secretly faxing the athletic department to fire him after that fiasco.

When Mike Dubose lost to USM 21-0, it was obvious beyond doubt that we had reached a level of suck unmatched since Ears Whitworth

Sounds like when we lost to Houston 20-7 in Dinardo's last year of 1999.
As Jed Clampett used to say - "pitiful, just plaaaaain pitiful."

Look back at us in the early 90's, I feel your pain.
We lost to UAB either Saban's 1st or 2nd year. Took me about half a week to not be completely pissed.

The 2000 season. We started that season number 3 in the country and opened up at the Rose Bowl against UCLA.
ON THE PLANE. Dubose got his coaches and scrapped the wide open Florida gameplan for conservative approach. We were embarrassed like 35-24 or something.
We squeaked by Vandy
USM came up and in the 2nd qtr it was 21-0. I have never to this day in my life heard Alabama fans trashing a coach like he was getting done coming out of Legion that night. I dont remember us coming close to scoring. There was no doubt in anybody's mind that he was gone. The loss to UCF was just the nail in the 2000 season. We started number 3 and went 3-8.

Mike DuBose is the reason you will never see an asst promoted again. We had to hire Shula because of probation but had we not been on probation Shula doesnt even get a phone call to be honest. Literally nobody wanted to take over a team losing 31 schollies.

For what Dubose did to Stallings just to get the job and then running this program into the ground and setting us back a decade. He deserves to live in guilt and shame.

Just kidding.

frick mike dubose.

I guess I'm not as well versed in Tide lore as I thought. What's the story here? (I would have thought Stallings would have been revered as a national champion coach and Bryant acolyte.)

I am not aware of the story with Dubose and Coach Stallings. As far as I know, most Bama fans love Coach Stallings and blame the A.D. at the time for the sour relationship.

Didn't Dubose win the SEC in 99 though?

Freddy Milons opened the season with a kick return for a TD. I started thinking about who we would play in the NC game. Then.......

What happened to ole Freddy? After the 99 season he was supposed to be a stud. Ugh.

Dubose was going to new AD Bob Bockrath about Stallings losing control of the program and Stallings knowing of players taking money. He did this to divide and conquer. Bockrath confronted Stallings. It got ugly. Stallings resigned. Bockrath hired Dubose. And the dark days began. Stallings is revered in this state. Dubose is despised.
