It seemed that Tennessee and Florida were the class of the SEC that year. Both were #2 and #3 when playing each other late. Tennessee beat LSU first but LSU got revenge. LSU with 3 SEC losses won the SEC title. Even though they were conference champions, were they the best when all said and done? Or was Florida or Tennessee the best still? Also, any chance of a future SEC champion with 3 conference losses or are those days long gone?

UF was the best team in the league that year, followed closely by UT.

Hat tip to LSU for doing what needed to be done, but that doesn't mean they were the best. I mean...UGA beat ut in knoxville that year but I'm not going to pretend we were the "better team"...we were just better during that 60 minute portion of the season.

The best team doesn't always win the championship. Upsets happen. Can't take anything for granted.

UF had no business losing a conference game that season.

UF was by far the best team in the SEC. I don't remember the exact score but they beat SEC Champ LSU by thirty or so. They had the bad luck of playing UT after FSU due to 9/11. Darnell Dockett twisted Earnest Graham's knee in the pile forcing UF to be one dimensional vs UT. If that game is played in September Fulmer is sitting home in December. Much like the AU game earlier in the year where Graham was injured and did not play, Spurrier loses a game he wins by 20+ with his RB in there.

UF (when healthy) was the only team in the country with a prayer of beating Miami that year.

LSU was the hottest team at the end of 2001. Florida was most talented followed very close by UT. That LSU team was over achieving big time but that's what you do. Went to the SECCG that year. NEVER EVER thought LSU would be in the game after halftime. Then Rohan goes down and they STILL beat #2 UT by running QB draws and 10 yd outs which Mauck executed flawlessly. Defense was a brick wall. That was the night I knew that coach was special.

OU fan since 1983; I post under the same name on Land Thieves landthieves.com

I like this forum. There are a lot of great topics. Most of the time just read, but will chime in when needed, especially when it involves the idiocy of Misery and Aggy.

That sounds like a good plan. You should stick with it.

That 2001 SECCG was the biggest upset in SECCG History. It was the equivalent of the Texas-Nebraska game in 1996 or the KState-A&M game in 1998.

LSU not only was a 3-loss team, they were down 2 scores and forced to play their backup QB, who then went on to basically win the game running QB draws the entire second half.

At halftime my Tennessee friends were literally booking rooms in Pasadena.

Uf lost Graham before the Tenn game. 2001 Uf was an insanely good team. Wouldn't have beaten them Miami boys though.

Tennessee had already beaten LSU as well.

That was one of the strangest most random 2nd halves of a game I have ever seen. It still makes no sense.

Yep, that Florida team was great, but man they laid an egg against Tennessee.
