Re: Alabama vs GT: Darwin Holt says Hello to Chick Granning....
That was the play that drove Bobby Dodd and GT out the SEC, (and sadly and foolishly led Tulane out with them). This sparked the Furman Bisher hit-article in the Atlanta Constitution accusing Bryant of savagery. This then led to the Look Magazine article accusing Bryant and Georgia coach Wally Butts of fixing the Georgia game the next year... which led to the law suit that put Look Magazine out of business.
I grew up HATING Georgia Tech... more than Tennessee or Auburn. Bryant once wore a helmet onto Grant Stadium because of all the whiskey bottles the yellow jacket fans threw at him. Joe Namath once was asked who hit him the hardest in his career replied: "I hate to give the bastards credit, but it was Georgia Tech." The next year he came in the game injured, for two plays, and threw two touchdowns.
One reason Bill Curry was never truly accepted when became head coach at Alabama was that he was a Bobby Dodd player and from Georgia Tech.

BTW, I have been complimentary of GA Tech's history on numerous occasions
Ask members of the UGA board on this site, pisses them off sometimes

why is it that some LSU fan has to jump up and down and yell "look at me" every time any interesting conversation about football starts?
I'll tell you why, because the rest of the conference is woefully ignorant of LSU football.

That's what is special about the 1917 Ga Tech championship. It was a unanimous/consensus award, a rarity for those times.
You don't have a clue what a retroactive national championship is, do yo?

It's not so much ignorant as much as, just like history, no one gives a frick.

Solely in the context of the upcoming UGA - Bama game this Sat.... He's just bringing a lil history & info to the board...
Grow a fricking pair & realize every post isn't about LSU & doesn't diss LSU if you're not mentioned... Gotdamn...

Let me go ahead and mark this down:
Alabama fans gives no fricks about history.
Got it.
Interesting that you post that in a thread about the history of Southern football. I guess you're not even reading this thread...

LSU was the first team from the South to win a national championship...20 years before those games were played.
Yes, RETROACTIVELY by the NCF and HAF, neither of which existed in 1908..........
But sure, LSU put southern football on the map in 1908.

Who the frick stepped on your mangy tail?
I wasn't putting down UGA, I was just telling the cracker why LSU fans stand up for their team - because ignorance. The only other thing I said in this thread, aside from jabs at bamatards, was that Tech should get some credit here too. I actually didn't start off talking about LSU in this thread.
Damn, and they call LSU fans sensitive.

Un-fricking-believable.
A thread about the history of Alabama vs Georgia, and the beginnings of Southern football, hijacked by wild-chapo into a poor-wittle-disrespected-LSU-who-was-so-important-back-when-no-one-knew-it-that-no-one-knew-it.
Is anyone surprised? I'm just amazed that wild-chapo hasn't accused the Southern Conference administration of fixing the games so Alabama would go to the Rose Bowl instead of LSU. Or that the refs hated LSU in the 1920s.
And wild-chapo, you wonder why people laugh and point... good god man.

false
I see your point, Choctaw. The same panels who crowned Ga Tech in '17, crowned LSU in '08. Not sure why the Old War Skule doesn't acknowledge this. That was by far the most dominant team in school history, statistically.

I live in Athens. My 97 year old neighbor was at that Georgia Yale game. Gives me chills to think about it!!

Yeah, and LSU didn't even manage to win their own conference outright. You shared the Conf championship with Auburn.
Kansas, Penn, and Chicago all went undefeated as well, against tougher competition at the time.
But yeah, LSU won an NC that year.
