When you look at football in the South, it is no secret that Alabama is the top program.

They are one of the top programs in the country - now and historically.

And they played in the 1st game that put Southern Football on the map, this game is even sometimes called "the game that changed the South"

It was the 1926 Rose Bowl against Washington. The Huskies were heavily favored and started fast taking a 12 to nothing 1st half lead, but ultimately fell to the boys from Dixie as Alabama scored 20 unanswered points in the 3rd quarter. The Huskies did score a 4th quarter touchdown, but it was not enough as Bama won the game 20 - 19.

OK - everyone saw that coming. But what was the 2nd big win for Southern football?

Glad you asked, it was the dedication of Sanford Stadium in Athens, GA when the Dawgs whipped heavily favored national powerhouse Yale.

The game was a big deal. Yale was one of the top programs in the country and had NEVER played a football game in the South. UGA was able to schedule this game because of the influence of Abraham Baldwin, a Yale graduate, who actually helped to establish Franklin College (today’s University of Georgia), and served as the institution’s first president.

Roughly 35,000 people attended the game, one of the largest crowds ever for a football game in Dixie at the time. NINE governors were in attendance.

And yes, the Hedges were up for the 1st game. UGA won that game 15 - 0.

Those 2 big wins over national powers did a bunch to create respect for Southern football.

LSU was the first team from the South to win a national championship...20 years before those games were played.

LSU put southern football on the map and is the reason we now have the SEC

I've looked all over for a legit, real, authentic '29 UGA/Yale ticket stub. So far, I've only come across one ever, it was in a museum in downtown athens under glass and it belonged to a private owner that donated it to the museum to display. I asked if it was for sale and was of course told no. Although I was like 20 at the time so there's no way I could have afforded it anyway.

WGDawg, my wife came across one of those tickets the other day while going through some old papers belonging to her grandfather. She shook a book, and it fell out! We knew it was a real find!

It is widely regarded by historians that the school that put Southern football on the map is the Georgia Institute of Technology.

In 1917, Ga Tech became the first southern school to win a national championship. The team, coached by Coach Heisman, also featured two players that were named All Americans, the first players from the south ever named as All Americans.

I don't disagree with that, GA Tech has a very storied history

largest victory margin and the 1928 Rose Bowl where a player from Cal ran the wrong way for 65 yards are two of the best football stories ever

The 2 games I mention were 2 of the 1st against traditional powers. Bama's Rose Bowl win was 3 years earlier than Tech's, and UGA getting a big power to come to the South was a little bit of a coup.

Also, I said "that helped to put Southern Football on the map"

Feel free to start a thread about the Golden Hurricanes, er, I mean Yellow Jackets on the ACC message board

oh wait...

Foolish people. Don't you all know that LSU invented football, and the internet, and everything, and anyone who denies it is just a deny-er?

...Or they are a ref from somewhere else who hates LSU and cheats them by throwing flags which is proof that they hate LSU? OR they are some media person who hates LSU because they don't tell everyone every time, every year that LSU is the bestest and most big university in the world?

Why LSU is the most important school in the South and is the best at the football ever and all those Rose Bowls and stuff are not nearly as important as LSU.

Besides, the refs cheated them all the time, and any teams that beat them couldn't really because LSU has "all that talent" and no one else could possibly have any talent. Surely no one else has a QB "that can sling it" ... and besides the refs cheat because they call penalties on LSU.

They were given that "title" almost 60 years after the 26 Rose Bowl. I'm pretty sure Southern Football was "on the map" prior to that.
