Will a 3rd Party rise to prominence?

Is it possible to have a 3-major party system? Where would it come from? A break off from existing parties or a rise of an already established party?

It would take three things in order to happen.
1 - An incredible amount of money. Literally a couple of billion dollars that could be, without harassment or question, be put into building the political machine.
2 - An incredible personality, on a federal level, that could endear a large segment of our populace to the new party's philosophy.
... or, #3. Number three would be doable by forgetting the first two and simply staging a military or revolutionary coup on some level, forcibly.

Doubtful.
Not impossible, but highly improbable.

Don't worry, it will be Rubio winning for the GOP.

Eh, that's only like 20% less apocalypsish.

20% only matters if I know what the doom scale looks like.

Anyone with the last name of Paul registers a 10/10 on the total world destruction scale.

Unless he gets caught in bed with a dead girl or a live boy, you are correct.
Not that I'm a fan of him, but it is seriously his or the GOP's to screw up.

Nice touch with the EWE quote.
Rubio has two things going for him. He proposes reasonable ideas and is brown.

I'm not watching that. Ron and Rand are both loons.

You only had to listen.
You could have stopped it.
This is the future you chose.

Sweet. That means the GOP loses in '16.

No the big "two" parties will never allow it. The rules are made and titled to them.
The only way would be over a long series of time starting small and rolling from state to state. We are talking election cycle after election cycle of small gains. I almost equate it to the only way for State and Ole miss to become big programs

This. Plus Scrooster's comment about the money. I wish it would happen, because I'd like to join a party. But I'm too fiscally and defensively conservative to be a democrat, and too socially liberal to be a republican. I don't fit anywhere. And I know a lot of people like me.
But under the current system, as I understand it, in order for a candidate to be on his/her state's ballot for President, their party must have received 10% of the popular vote in the previous election. I think Gary Johnson (the Libertarian candidate) only got that much of the vote in maybe 3-3 states.
So, unless there is enough money to get the message out and convince enough people to vote for a party, over several years, it's not going to happen. I think this would make our founding fathers very sad.

Both parties will do everything in their power to keep a 3rd, moderate or libertarian, party from gaining any traction. It's in both their interests.
