Trying to decide if I should get an aluminum frame or splurge and get carbon. I'm not going to be racing or anything, but I do plan on putting in ~100 mi/wk. Is a carbon frane really worth the extra 700$?

I don't know anything about this, but if you're one of the guys that ride during rush hour with a 25 car parade behind you then we need to talk..

If you're one of the idiots that rides on FM 359 we need to discuss some things. If not carbon fiber is always better, I say this knowing nothing of cycling, but a lot about drag cars.

If you're not racing, it doesn't make any difference, especially if you've never ridden much before.

If you want to start racing, your can start with your aluminum, then go buy a carbon and keep your aluminum as a back-up.

Don't forget to buy bike shorts (the kind you wear under loose athletic shorts). You'll thank me later.

My SO's sister's boyfriend (I know) bikes everywhere. He does not race. He does not have carbon.

So my answer is no, it's not worth it.

Take that fwiw

Ask for Roby. Tell him his friend from Mississippi Army National Guard referred you.

He is a pro and loves to help..

I've got a Lance endorsed Trek ... they make good bikes.

Carbon fiber is a lot, A LOT, more money that aluminum and not worth it IMHO unless you just have money coming out of your anus somuchso that you just want everyone to know you're riding carbon fiber.

I've had my Trek Navigator 300 for about ten years or so, maybe longer, and it is still going strong after three or four sets of new tires ... it's really a do everything bike. I go dirt road, off road, pavement ... I only paid like $600.00 for it brand new, decked-out with everything, but it has been a great investment. Shimano gears and brakes ... I highly recommend Trek.

Yeah, Treks are great bikes. I've had two of their MB's and a GT MB. So I'm used to cycling but haven't forayed onto the road yet. I'm leaning towards the trek 1.1c.

When I was in Dallas, I used Bicycles Plus in Snyder Plaza off of Lovers, and Dallas Bike Works on W. Lawther. Both good shops.

Where I live, everyone has a bicycle. I typically just go on a run to exercise and drive if I need to get somewhere. It's nice to have, though.

FWIW, I have a coworker who does the Ironman comps, 100 milers, etc. She rides aluminum.

If you are just starting out, you shouldn't go all out for the carbon, IMO. You can get a good road bike for 600-700 bucks. I ride but not nearly as much as when I first got my bike. The city here is interconnected with trails so its a viable way to get around and good exercise.

Where does one find a carbon road bike for $600-$700? In Arizona at the Beachfront Cycle Shop?

ETA: I misread the post. I apologize for the smartarse comment, Numberwang.

If you don't plan to race then aluminum is fine. (And still fine for entry-level racing.) You won't notice the small extra weight relative to carbon.

Yeah, that's what what I'm thinking. The one I'm looking at has a carbon fork, which they say is a good dampener.
