If you're religious, what's your jam?

Grew up SBC then non-denominational, going to an Episcopal church now. The liturgy is really cool to me -- I like being connected to thousands of years of tradition. Bonus points for not re-sacrificing Christ every week.

Kinda got tired of the huge crowds, bands, and light shows. I like the small, beautiful buildings with communion every week.

ETA: Was asking about what denomination you are, but hey, hymns/choruses are cool too.

Just a Closer Walk with Thee (New Orleans style of course)
All Creatures of our God and King
Take my Life and Let it Be

I know what you mean.

This seems contradictory, to your statements as well as many of Paul's letters.

To answer the question:

My Redeemer Lives
No Turning Back
At your Name
El Shaddai
How can it Be
My Heart is Yours
Who I am
Blessed Be your name

Not really religious, more of a Deist if I had to put a name on it, but I still attend Episcopal mass most Sundays. My favorite hymns are "Come Thou Fount", "Jerusalem, My Happy Home", "Be Thou My Vision", and "All Creatures of Our God and King".

Let Them Come to the Water
We've Got to Love Love Love Each Other (only works if you've got essentially a swamp pop band)
Let Us Build The City of God
Swamp pop Alleluia

I'm assuming this means communion? Why are Protestants so offended by Catholic tradition. God made the Catholics and the Orthodox's the only way to be a Christian for a pretty long time. It wasn't until some uppity Europeans wanted to have divorces and break their Holy vows that Protestantism even existed. Have you ever read Martin Luther's 95 Theses? Most of them are gibberish. So why throw away all of the Catholic Church's tradition that God/Jesus laid down for Christians? I don't get it.

Haven't read them, but could you throw out some examples of gibberish... I'm genuinely interested.

What's the gibberish you speak of? I always look forward to Reformation Day.

Most of it is about purgatory. Which most modern protestants don't believe in anyway. Also talks about how the Pope, Priests, Bishops and curates should act. Again a system that Protestants reject.

What it boils down to is some German guy saw corruption in the Catholic Church in the 1500s, he wanted to change it, not destroy it. Also he wasn't the sole person behind the Protestant Reformation, the Scottish did a better job, IMO. I was raised Presbyterian so a bit biased but still.

Means a particular view that Christ's body and blood is literally presence as you eat and drink (transsubstantiation). Protestants usually believe either Christ's body and blood is spiritually present (consubstantiation) or that it's just in memoriam ("memorial" view).

I love communion, I just think Christ died once for all, so I don't agree with that aspect of the Catholic church. Otherwise, I really like Catholics/Catholicism and traditional liturgy.

ETA: I think women should be able to be pastors/priest, so that also narrows down my area of religion quite a bit.

Yeah I know the difference, but personally it's not something I worry about. Not a Christian. If I did ever want to go back I think I would try out Catholicism.

The overwhelming majority of Martin Luther's complaints about the church involved the structure and personal actions of the churches priests, bishops, etc. It was, for the most part, NOT an opposition to the theology of Catholicism itself.

Martin Luther was a catholic who opposed certain abuses within the catholic church, not someone who suddenly "saw the light" and spoke out against the theology of Catholicism.

Martin Luther died believing in transubstantiation, the perpetual virginity of Mary, the ascension, purgatory, etc. He would have in no way agreed with most protestants who worship him today.

Very true. He probably would have hated Vatican II.

To the other poster, so what about Catholicism attracts you to Christianity if you'd come back?

I don't like the Protestant Churches I grew up in. With things like the megachurches it just has an added slimeball feel to it. The Catholic Church has been around for over a thousand years. I don't think I'll ever believe what's in the Bible, but if I did, I don't think the modern WASP nests are not where God would reside, IMO.

Former baptist, now in a Bible church

I find as I've gotten older I'm a lot less dogmatic towards my beliefs than I was raised growing up.

I've learned to like a lot more traditional views and practices than I did. I like litergy, communion, observance of Ash and Lent, and older hymns these days. I would say that if I landed in a town with only a Catholic Church, I'd be fine to attend.

My older jams are:
Come thou Fount
Christ the Rock
It is Well
I walk through the Garden Alone

Newer Jams:
Oh How He Loves
Feet may fail (oceans)
Christ is Risen

I like to slow jam to Paul's Letter to the Romans. He's like the Barry White of Christ's love for us.

Why you gotta discriminate? Non religious can like religious music.

Blessed assurance
When we all get to heaven

My favorite is when the deacons would recite the cwm Ronda and everyone sings real slow to each line. Pin don't think they do that at white churches.
