Jimmy Carter gave back the Panama Canal. Does anyone believe there is a possibility that Obama may give back Gitmo?

CUBA/CASTRO DEMANDS GITMO BE RETURNED - Says turning over "illegally occupied" Naval Station Guantanamo Bay necessary for normal relations:

Raul Castro: U.S. must return Guantanamo for normal relations source

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica — Cuban President Raul Castro demanded on Wednesday that the United States return the U.S. base at Guantanamo Bay, lift the half-century trade embargo on Cuba and compensate his country for damages before the two nations re-establish normal relations.

Castro told a summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States that Cuba and the U.S. are working toward full diplomatic relations but "if these problems aren't resolved, this diplomatic rapprochement wouldn't make any sense."

Castro and President Obama announced on Dec. 17 that they would move toward renewing full diplomatic relations by reopening embassies in each other's countries. The two governments held negotiations in Havana last week to discuss both the reopening of embassies and the broader agenda of re-establishing normal relations.

Obama has loosened the trade embargo with a range of measures designed to increase economic ties with Cuba and increase the number of Cubans who don't depend on the communist state for their livelihoods.

The Obama administration says removing barriers to U.S. travel, remittances and exports to Cuba is a tactical change that supports the United States' unaltered goal of reforming Cuba's single-party political system and centrally planned economy.
Cuba has said it welcomes the measures but has no intention of changing its system. Without establishing specific conditions, Castro's government has increasingly linked the negotiations with the U.S. to a set of longstanding demands that include an end to U.S. support for Cuban dissidents and Cuba's removal from the U.S. list of state sponsors of terrorism.

On Wednesday, Castro emphasized an even broader list of Cuban demands, saying that while diplomatic ties may be re-established, normal relations with the U.S. depend on a series of concessions that appear highly unlikely in the near future.

"The reestablishment of diplomatic relations is the start of a process of normalizing bilateral relations, but this will not be possible while the blockade still exists, while they don't give back the territory illegally occupied by the Guantanamo naval base," Castro said.

He demanded that the U.S. end the transmission of anti-Castro radio and television broadcasts and deliver "just compensation to our people for the human and economic damage that they're suffered."

The U.S. State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Castro's remarks.

We were renting the canal, technically. I don't think we are renting Gitmo.

I don't know if its even possible fr the president to give American soil away himself. The only time I know of that it has happened was with Mexico near El Paso.

When has that stopped this guy from doing anything?

He's the only POTUS in history to have the SCOTUS vote 9-0 against him in terms of the Constitutionality of some of his actions. And keep in mind that two of those judges were his appointments and are considered far leftist liberals, Sotomeyer and Kagan.

He's on a roll dumping prisoners outta Gitmo and he has said it will be closed before he leaves office.

He'll give it away.

Apparently we send them $4,000 a year for it (no idea why its such a laughably low number) but they literally don't Cash the check. They refuse and put it in a drawer or something

As for Obama as sad as it is I could totally see this being his way of closing GITMO

Normalize relations with Cuba>to do that they demand to get GITMO back>Pres says what can I do I want normal relations with Cuba (which most ppl agree with) and to do that I have to close GITMO, it was theirs anyways right?

Incorrect. It's actually a large group of presidents from both parties. He is the one who has had it done the most though.

Yeah I don't think so. Not because he doesn't want to, because I'm sure he does very much, Cuba asking or no, but I don't think he will.

From Wikipedia:

We have a permanent lease on Guantanamo. It can be broken only if both governments agree or if the U.S. abandons the port. The lease treaty was signed in 1934 but was voided by the Cuban government when Castro took power. The U.S. has never recognized Cuba's right to void the lease.

I heard they accidentally cashed one once, which effectively gave the Cuban government's consent to the agreement.

No. He may be an arrogant SOB who doesn't care about defending our sphere of influence or have a clue about the purpose behind the Monroe Doctrine, but giving N.S. Guantanamo Bay back to the Cubans would be bad politics for the Democrat party, which has enough problems right now.

This is what happens when a woman gives birth to a fatherless child, and then as a young boy is schooled in a madrasa, and later immigrates to America and is mentored by Saul Alinsky, Frank Marshall Davis, Rev Wright and the like, becomes a pseudo constitutional lawyer, later a community rabble rouser/organizer, runs for public office and is elected Senator of Illinois, and thanks to low info voters is elected twice to the highest office in the US.

Now we have shithole communists in Cuba telling the US how it's gonna be, but yeah I saw it coming.

Can someone explain to me why closing a U.S. prison/naval base in another country is such an egregious act?

Hold up wait a damn minute, how in the glorified frick do we owe Cuba any compensation for severing ties and not supporting their militant communist dictatorship? Raul needs to let some of the air out of his head.

We pay them each year in gold per the agreement. The method of payment has never changed.

Take that b.s. to the poli board. A fatherless child actually became a senator and then POTUS. He's not perfect and I'm not defending him but you sound like an idiot. Focus on the issue at hand.

China and Sinopec have already bought all the mineral and drilling rights from Cuba for a few measly free refrigerators(actually they gave each Cuban family one)as part of the deal.

Gitmo what I would do. Move the Atlanta braves there firstly. Then I say we build a super wallymart, super tarjet, a Kroger/Publix and a home depot/lowes. sell everything for 10 cents on the dollar and then next year open a Bank of America and ruin their economy.
