Beginning Scuba Diver - any tips? UPDATE: I'm certified.

My wife and I are going to Key Largo for a week in early February. As an early birthday gift, I'm getting the PADI open water certification.
Going through the online training now, but I'm wondering if any experienced divers have tips or recommendations. Anything you wish you would have known as a beginner?
And if you tell me that I should try a rapid ascent from 30 meters, I'll kick you in the balls.

I took a two week course meeting 4 hours a night for 10 days. I'd recommend doing something like this before you go and get one of those "one day" courses. If that's what your doing, you're taking the right path

Don't dive with sinus congestion, your nose will bleed like you just got punched by a MMA fighter.
I agree with Roger, one day cert seems short for the complexities that you need to absorb that will keep you alive, should something go wrong.
My NAUI cert involved scuba training in a pool first, followed by two dives in Fla. springs, finishing with two offshore, open-water dives at the oil rigs.

NAUI/YMCA certified. I do not recommend one of those quicky courses that PADI is famous for, but then again, if you want to take your life in your own hands, go for it.

Don't drown.

Been through PADI and SSI open water certification, and SSI Nitrox. There isn't a ton of difference between the 2. SSI seemed more thorough but that might have been because I did SSI first. Just make sure you learn the basics, know emergency procedures, and pay attention to your instructors in pool and on your certification dives.
If you have an specific questions, you have my email. I've done alot of dives in the Keys

Thanks man.
To clarify, this isn't a one day. I do the knowledge-based learning online, then I have one pool day and two dive days onsite.

I've been diving since 1982....my wife and kids are divers as well. The one thing I stressed to them when they were learning was equalization techniques and taking it slow descending. Nothing ruins a dive worse than ear pressure and not being able to alleviate it. Go slow, and if you can't equalize, ascend a few feet and try again....it will work out if you don't rush getting to the bottom. Good luck!

Biggest thing to remember is when you're ascending continue breathing. Don't hold your breath or your lungs will explode. The checkout dive stuff is easy. Do try to stick with it because it's kinda easy to forget all the stuff you learn. Here's a link for gear. It's a hell of a lot cheaper than the markup you'll see at your local scuba supply store. LINK. I mostly do river diving for relics.

Those are the two best tips.. on the financial side of things.. don't rush into buying equipment and end up like me with 25 yr old equipment barely used.

Sharks. Watch out for them.

Dig it out next time I'm down and we'll dive at Blue Water Quarry in Pelham (if that place is still around).
