My wife and I are going to Key Largo for a week in early February. As an early birthday gift, I'm getting the PADI open water certification.

Going through the online training now, but I'm wondering if any experienced divers have tips or recommendations. Anything you wish you would have known as a beginner?

And if you tell me that I should try a rapid ascent from 30 meters, I'll kick you in the balls

Hope you don't smoke.

Run your arse off for a couple of weeks before you go down ... get the bad gas out of your system.

During your pool dive ... relax.

Ask for the biggest flippers that fit you. Big floppies.

Skills in the pool are key. Pay attention and nail those skills. You will know when you leave the pool if this is for you or it. Good luck.

Where are you doing the two open water dives? Has that been determined?

Atlantic side in the ocean. Not bay side. Other than that, I don't know.

Dig it out next time I'm down and we'll dive at Blue Water Quarry in Pelham (if that place is still around).

That's where I certified.

It's been so long, I would probably need to recertify.. it's literally been 25 yrs since I went diving. Soon as warm weather hits.. I'm going about as opposite as you can in hobbies.

48 today, shouldn't be too bad. Agree though that it's not the getting in but rather the getting out that can suck.

Stay away from day courses
Learn to be neutral.
Don't buy weights or a tank.
Get a great mask that's comfortable
Learn to equalize

When diving
Go slow. Look for the small stuff and you will see a metric shite ton more.
Relax
Don't touch fire coral.
Get a go pro
Learn to go upside down vertical on your head and you can see good things under overhangs
Most of the really cool stuff is in <60 ft of water.
Juvenile spotted drum is awesome

That was just Alahunter spraying Cheez Whiz in the water.

I understand the tank, but why not weights? Don't some BCDs come with weights?

Got one! I'll post footage when I'm done.

My head hurts just thinking about this but I'll give it a go.

Expound please. We're not checking bags so it's a no-go for carry-on luggage, but I suppose I could buy one there and FedEx it back home. Just wondering why it's so important.

Excellent stuff! Keep it coming!

I have gotten hung up in trotlines and nets before, it never was a serious situation for me, but I could see it easily turning into one, under the wrong circumstances.

For river diving knives have saved many lives. My buddy's dad got his secondary regulator caught in some limbs in a high current area & he had to cut the hose. I would recommend getting tanks. I have 2 steel tanks. They're heavy but you can get more air in them than aluminum & they don't mess up your buoyancy when the air level/psi drops. There may be BCDs that have built in weights but yes you will need a few even in open water.
