LSU fans, would you welcome a 3-4 philosophy from new DC?

Are you partial to the 4-3?

I don't think we quite have the personnel for a 3-4. We'd need bigger lbs and a nose. I wouldn't mind the change though.

At this point LSU will take whatever the candidate brings. They're not in a choosing position

Bama has really only used a true 3-4 a few times the last few years. This year we used 4 linemen a lot when we played nickel, which is most of the time thanks to the spread offenses.

I think we have the personnel with Valentine at NT and Teuhema as rush OLB. I don't think we have enough depth at lb to have a nice 3 deep in the 3-4, but we have enough to run it if we desire.

Man there are a million other threads to troll in, why do it in one of the few football-related threads?

Think that got something to do with switching up y'all recruiting and going after lighter DE's? 2 or 3 years ago Deshawn Hand would have been a linebacker in Bama's system.

Yep. Saban is having to recruit smaller and faster athletes. Hand would be a LB two years ago. The spread and hunh are changing the way defenses recruit. The big negative here is that when you play arky or LSU the smaller players will struggle to stop the run. But what can you do?

one thing that keeps saban on top is his ability to modify his own style.

I really fell for sabans system in the 2003 nc game. when I saw marcus spears (a personal friend I might add) drop back from the DE, and pick off a pass, I absolutely lved the use of the talent.

he would be a LB today

We ran a 3-4 when Saban was here and did a pretty damn good job of it, so it wouldn't be anything new.

I guess I am asking you guys this because the traditional 3-4 with 300 llb DE's and 250+LB's is beastly against ground and pound and pro style offenses but seems to struggle against spread teams with speed and mobile QB's. I can't criticize a Saban defense but I think it is time to simplify his NFL playbook.

i'm open to any change that involves us going away from running 2 cornerbacks and 9 safeties on defense.

i like bigger linebackers and defensive ends, but the proliferation of the spread punishes that. gotta be a happy medium between our personnel/scheme and a heavy defense like bama's.

Right on cue from an Aggie to answer for LSU. We don't even have to speak; we can let lil bro do the talking...like magic.

They would basically be conceding 2015 with a switch to the 3-4. Not a smart move at this juncture, imo.

If we hire Carrie Underwood as DC, LSU will still beat A&M's sorry arse.

At this rate, she would probably wouldn't want the job either

We don't have the personnel for that scheme right now. It would take a major transition covered the span of 3-4 years. LSU has the talent on D to run a 4-3 and compete right now. I don't think we'll be changing.

Good question, though.
