An interesting topic for race week.

ETA: I've been able to swim since I was 3.

Quite well. As much time as I spend on 30A, I'd be fricked if I didn't.

Black people have higher muscle and bone density.

It's not a mystery. It's not racist. Everything is okay.

My dad won national championships in college, and my mother went to the Olympic trials in butterfly, twice.

I can swim, is what I'm saying.

back when I was at Auburn, they made every single student take a swimming test and if you couldnt swim, you had to take swimming as a physical education class.

Not sure thats required these days!

I swam solo past the second sandbar to the deep blue and back again the night before I got married. I guess I considered it symbolic.

Yes, and it's shocking how many people can't. That's kinda one of those "musts" in life.

Is it a generational thing?

In the pre internet and cable days everybody had a nearby swimmin hole where you went skinny dipping.

It seems like many more young people & children these days can't swim than when I was growing up. And we didn't do formal swimming lessons. You just frickin got in the pool, lake, river, whatever, & kept trying until you did it. Kids taught other kids how.

It is true than an infant can instinctually swim.

Unless you abort it

You're probably a lot younger than I am. ... My son started swimming classes when he was about 4 just because everyone I knew with kids did it. They're great if you get good teachers. I guess we just didn't have much of a need for them when I was younger, but it seemed we had more access to water even though not as many had pools back then. We had a neighborhood "club" with a pool, and there are many lakes, ponds, & river in the area I grew up. Most people spent half the summer camping around them. Just different times now, I guess.

I took lessons through the Red Cross and became a Life Guard. I never did get my WSI.

It's second nature. Grew up in pools, ponds, lakes, creeks, rivers, etc.

My family taught me to swim via the backyard pool and summer trips to Florida.
