People know very well what average means - they often aren't using the same "average," however. Some will use the mean, some will use the median, and some will use the mode.

Median nor mean is 9-10 wins, though. Not entirely sure what is meant by mode. I am a bit slow sometimes!

Depends on the metric. Across the NCAA? No. For Richt's tenure? It is pretty close to the median/mean.

His median to date is 9.64 (135 wins/14 seasons).
His mean to date is 10 (# of wins ranked (1) 13, (2) 12, (3) 11, (4) 11, (5) 10, (6) 10, (7) 10, (8) 10, (9) 9, (10) 9, (11) 8, (12) 8, (13) 8, (14) 6. Midpoint would be the 7th-8th ordinal, both of which are 10).
His mode to date is 10 (most commonly occurring number).

So for Richt, 9-10 is his "average" over his career. There's a reason a lot of people predict us to go 9-4/10-3 every year.
