if you're Mizzou, that we don't just promote our D-line coach, Craig Kuwolski, from within to become our new defensive coordinator?

This would be the D-line coach who has coached up the past two SEC Defensive Players of the Year (Shane Ray 2014, Michael Sam 2013) and also molded his other two starting defensive ends the past 2 years, Kony Ealy and Marcus Golden, into NFL draft picks.

This would be the D-line coach who has coached up the Mizzou D-line to lead the SEC in sacks each of the past 2 years - done mostly while only rushing four.

This would, for good measure, also be the D-Line coach who prior to the last few years also coached current NFL D-linemen Sheldon Richardson, Aldon Smith, Ziggy Hood and Jacquies Smith.

He is currently a finalist for 2014 D-line coach of the year.

Yes we have other options, including the Memphis D-coordinator who is a Pinkel disciple. But this one seems like a pretty open and shut case to me. You give it to our current D-line coach before someone else comes in and steals him away from us. Right?

He did a great job this year, thought you were incredibly well coached on that side of the ball.

You bring in Barry Odom if he wants to come.

He did a good job at Mizzou and has done a great job at Memphis. Plus he is almost 10 years younger than Coach Kul.

I think Coach Kul gets a big raise either way.

Mizzou's defensive coordinator Dave Steckel just accepted the head coaching position at Missouri State, an FCS school.

Am talking who to replace him with.

Lost you where Cheese? The guy has always had aspirations to be a HC. He's 57. He's not going to be handed the reigns to an FBS school. He doesn't carry that much swag. So if he wants to be a HC before he retires and takes a FCS job...god for him.

I can understand this line of reasoning and wouldn't be unhappy with Odom.

But I would hate to have Kul get wooed with a big offer to become a DC somewhere else only for us to later find out that he was the clear catalyst in developing our d-line play so well in recent years and have it drop off under someone else.

Perhaps that would happen anyway if he were spread thin trying to coach the whole defense instead of just the D-line. It's a fair question, hence the thread.

You offer him the job first. If he's comfortable with just coaching the DL then you offer it to Odom.

Mizzou you are in the SEC now. Steckel should be paid as a DC more than any FCS school could pay their HC.

He's going to be taking a pretty decent pay cut if it goes down. Like getting paid a third of what he gets paid now if Missouri State bumps up the pay versus what their last dude was making.

That is what I was thinking.

That is where you lost me. I get he wants to take the chance but at that age and getting near the end of his working life seems he would want to boost that retirement money now. Thanks for your explanation but if he has a wife and kids seems the risk / reward is not a good one.

When you hear the Kirby Smart and John Chavis talk about HC jobs I never believe them because staying on an SEC staff is money in the bank. Part of the benefit of being in the SEC is the money and benefits for the secondary staff.
