If we had an 8-team playoff

The debate would be between a 10-2 MSU and a 9-3 Ole Miss that beat MSU.
Controversy will be in any system.

We should both be in over Michigan State

completely agree.
Hell....CBB has 64 teams and there's still controversy every year.

I was thinking that too. Honestly I think we would get in over state because we have better wins and they seem to value that higher than losses.

100%, in fact the bigger the field, the more teams will bitch.
You'd have 5-6 teams thinking they should be #8.

5 power conferences, 4 spots. It's a real problem

It will never be perfect. Go back and look at the last 10 years rankings prior to the bowls and tell me how you can structure a playoff to include the right number of teams?

16 is too many. You saw what a 16-1 matchup would look like yesterday in the SEC Championship Game.
Four might be the right number. Time will tell.
This year:
#8 played #1 and lost by 5 in a game that wasn't that close.
#7 played #2 and lost by 19.
That tells me that 8 might not be the right number. I think it is either 4 or 6 for college football as it is right now.

If they did 16, they should implement some sort of byes for top seeds

Still, it is hard to argue that six teams did not have legitimate arguments to be in the final four.
Sure there would be arguments about number eight, but most would not argue the number eight team would be in the top three or four.
Eight team playoff would actually let conference championships matter while still giving non-power five a shot as well as unique situations (Alabama 2011).

8 team is the way to go.
Conference champion.
Big 12 gets both of theirs.
You get your boise st in there.
Then your 1 or 2 non-champs. (the MSUs)

NO ONE CARES WHO IS #9 AS LONG AS NUMBER 1 IS IN THE PLAYOFF

If you went to 16, here is the system that I would use.
Some sort of computer formula
Top 16 teams
If any conference champion is in the Top 20, they can take the #16 spot.
First round games are at campus sites.
Seeds can move by 1 spot to avoid first round conference matchups or rematches.
Quarterfinals and Semifinals rotate among the six bowls
National Championship is independent from bowls, but cannot be in same site as semifinal
No more bowls.
Using the AP poll, here would be the matches
Peach Bowl Pod
16. Arizona State at 1. Alabama
9. Georgia Tech at 8. Mississippi State
Cotton Bowl Pod
13. UCLA at 4. Baylor
12. Kansas State at 5. Ohio State
Orange Bowl Pod
15. Missouri at 2. Florida State
10. Ole Miss at 7. Michigan State
Fiesta Bowl Pod
14. Georgia at 3. Oregon
11. Arizona at 6. TCU
Peach and Cotton winners play in Sugar
Orange and Fiesta winners play in Rose
Sugar and Rose winners play in championship game.

And neither team has any fricking business being included in a national championship discussion. All the more reason to keep it at four.
