Auburn's season - serious discussion

WTF happened? Unlike LSU, I don't think anyone saw 8-4 coming for the defending SEC champs this year.
Any of you Auburn fans had the opportunity to step back and assess what actually happened in that two week stretch against A&M and Georgia?

38.6 ppg allowed the last 6 SEC games after LSU was a small factor

I don't think 8-4 was that unrealistic coming into the season. The way it happened was a little surprising because at the time we played a&m there was no reason to think we could lose that game.
Was a rough schedule and as everyone loves to point out the ball isn't always going to bounce your way.
And please don't cite me what fans post on this board because no one is honest with themselves here.

Serious. Lost games they pulled out last year. It happens. Still a pretty damn good team. If QB transition is smooth next year they are only two or three pieces away from competing for west again. A lot of talent there.

Lack of talent on defense. Ellis Johnson didn't know how to accommodate for it.
Too many costly mistakes on offense early in games.
Not efficient enough in the red zone in big games.
Auburn's offense moved all over Miss State. The defense struggled for sure, but Auburn's offense outside of the two costly turnovers early on was able to get to the ten yard line FOUR times. 6 points. If Auburn is able to score touchdowns, they go up prior to the half and get the ball back at the start of the 2nd half.
Auburn's defense gave up 21 points to Texas A&M because of one play. The slant play absolutely owned Auburn's defense and it took Johnson way too long to figure out how to cover it. Add in the blocked field goal for a TD, and Auburn was in a dire predicament. Still though, Auburn was knocking on the door for a victory. Offense has costly turnover in the red zone. Game pretty much over. Almost pulled a miracle to win anyway, and again, a costly turnover.
Auburn started well against Georgia. Almost took the opening kickoff down the field. Drove down a scored easily. Defense actually stepped up. But there was roughing the kicker call (about 6 inches from a block) and then a muffed punt. Offense sputtered and Georgia went up 17-7. I think the team was just tired at that point and didn't have any gas left to try for another comeback.
Auburn had a very similar 1st half against Alabama like they did Miss State. Except this time, Auburn's defense stepped up. Auburn was able to get a 33-21 advantage, and then Ellis Johnson's inability to adjust kicked in. 14 points were handed to Alabama as for some reason, the secondary thought it was okay to let the best receiver in the country run downfield untouched and uncovered. 7 points were handed to Alabama after a costly fumble in the 1st quarter too.
"Handed" is the problem with this Auburn team. Way too many times, teams were "handed" points thanks to turnovers on offense and lack of defensive strategy.
Just wasn't meant to be.

Wow didn't realize that was happening.

Combination of a few things. Defense was poor. Really hurt by Lawson going down and the lack of DEs. Offense was inconsistent. Mistakes and penalties were costly. TAMU loss was bad and broke our team for the UGA game. All that, combined with a brutal schedule, did us in. Our road games:
#20 [now #9],
#1 [now #10],
#4 [now #12],
#15 [now #14],
#1 [now #1],

The team lost focus after the MSU game and mistakes all over the place, combined with a lack of pass rush and lackluster DB play turned in to a Mark Richt-like series of missed opportunities.

`This is maybe the most disappointing season i can remember, everyone knew that AU was sitting on an offense that was NC caliber and early on it looked as though the defense was going to be legit but as the season wore on it totally collapsed.

Yep, uncharacteristic mistakes and the schedule did not set up well at all. I never understood how that offense executed with so few penalties or fumbles. This year some games AU was snake bit in that regard.

I predicted 4 losses.
You can't win in the SEC with a bad defense.
Also the schedule was brutal, with trips to KSU, Bama and Georgia.

I don't think their year was so different than last year, they just didn't win all the games that they pulled out of their asses last year.

How many did Auburn "pull out of their" arse last year? One?

Georgia and Alabama for sure. Then of course they beat Miss St and A&M in the final minute in games that were total tossups.

Most objective people believed Auburn had the edge against Alabama going into OT last year. But then again, "There goes Davis!"

I agree 100% about AU. Even after that Thursday night Kansas State game and the Miss St game, i still thought Auburn was the best team in the nation before the A&M Game. I don't know what happened but whoever replaces Nick Marshal has some big shoes to fill. I gotta say i'm glad to see that dude go. Malzahn really does have an effective offensive scheme. You gotta outscore AU in order to beat them. Good thread OP

So winning close games is "pulling games out of their asses"?
Georgia for one.
Alabama was tied 28-28 going into overtime. It's not like Alabama was 1 second away from winning and Auburn did some crazy miracle to regain the lead.
