Couldn't you guys have gone for like a highly accomplished assistant, I dont know I could be wrong but I just dont think McElwains resume is good enough for Florida

McElwain won 2 championships with a tattoo'd a-hole and a Rhodes Scholar and then rebuilt an abysmal CSU team. Couldn't ask for anymore than that realistically in florida's situation.

McElwain was Nick Saban's OC.

I think most agree this was a great hire. He was a highly accomplished assistant, then he won at CSU. Which most would have argued was impossible.

Two BCS titles not accomplished enough for you as an assistant?

so an assistant is good enough but not a guy that took a dumpster fire of a team to the top of their conference (best non-power 5 conference) in 3 seasons, who also was able to win 2 national titles while he was an assistant? moron

Why would most have considered 22-16 at CSU impossible?

guess not but 2 titles at bama before the talent really got crazy should qualify him as a good assistant id think lol also took a shite team to 10-2 in 3 years id say thats a nice bonus

While I do think we could have done better with someone like Graham or Rodriguez-- McElwain was a highly accomplished assistant, his offenses helped carry Alabama to two titles, though he's a spread guy when Saban isn't handcuffing him.

I'm assuming Rich Rod is happy in Tucson otherwise not getting an offer from Florida or Nebraska is crazy-- the guy is still relatively young and rebuilt two BCS conference bottom feeders into Top 10 programs (WVU was essentially an ankle injury to Pat White away from winning the national title in 2006 or 2007 or whatever-- they wouldn't have been SEC good but remember the SEC team was the second choice both of those years). I don't think he was a good fit at Michigan and I also think Michigan was-- and is-- a toxic environment, it was the Michigan Athletic Department that turned in for the minor practice time violations-- they're screwed.

McElwain is a great hire. The guy has done a great job in three years as a head coach, he won Natties under Saban, he is offensive minded. Congrats to the Gators and thanks for your defensive coordinator (who tried to be a head coach)

He's gonna be better than Muschamp for sure. If he's not, this is going to prove to be an extremely costly setback for Florida football.

He took a 3-9 mid major and improved them each year
4-8
8-6
10-2

Pretty solid progression

Personally why would you hire a guy under nick saban? i mean saban brings in the top recruits and you have like the best of the best to work with on offense and defense. Makes assistant look really good see Kiffin.I mean one good year at CSU and now he's Fl. coach. Hope that 20 plus million your paying over the next few years is worth it.

Time will tell, I guess. As a Gator fan, I am excited about the hire.

Florida brings in great recruits too, doesn't really matter who the coach is. He is going to have a ton of talent to work with. Muschamp in four years had 4 top 3 rated QB's (two of which were #1) at his disposal. I feel a lot better with that kind of talent being developed under a guy like McElwain.

They have to prove themselves outside of Bama. McElwain did a pretty decent job at Colorado State. He wasn't their first choice, but he's not a bad choice.
