Just how bad is it being a State Fan in Oxford for the Egg Bowl?

I have been hearing horror stories and it's my first trip up there for this game.

My family went a couple years ago and said they were cussed at and spit on. It didn't matter that my 8 year old niece was with them. They said you would think that people would be a little nicer since they had a little kid in tow.

Mom is bringing her mace. I just want to know what to expect.

I went once and I will never go back again.

ETA - The Ole Miss fan base is the epitome of white trash. Don't go to the grove (overrated - Left Field Lounge is 1000x better) and don't bring cowbells.

It will be really bad this year. My dad has some friends that won't even return his phone calls right now...

If they had beat Aub & Arky, it would be a bit different, and they would probably be more friendly. They are very very vulnerable right now.

ETA: With that said, I'm going with my family.

It's not bad. Be teflon to a little bs, preferably be around "Rebel friends" as much as you can, and you'll make friends quickly...

I was one of 2 State fans in the EZ Club at the 2012 EB(along with my date), and I had a great time and made a bunch of friends up there. Of course they are going to talk a little smack, but it's really easy to tell the difference between the good-natured ribbers and the drunken assholes. Just tune out the assholes. It's amazing how easy it is to disarm the ribbers if you agree with them on some small point or are otherwise complementary about even the smallest thing, at which point you turn them into your favor and against the assholes...

The tension would have been worse had they beaten Arky and been playing for a chance at the west(still needing Bama's help -- but not unlike us in that regards)... I don't expect it to be too bad now that they aren't expecting much. If we were to lose, it would definitely suck getting out of there, but you've just gotta have a mute switch and be complementary...

I went two years ago and had a terrible experience, but only because I agreed to sit in the OM student section with my OM buddy. I had a great time in the grove before and after the game. Just stay out of the student section and you should be fine. I'll be going again this year and will be sitting with some OM friends far away from the student section. Looking forward to the game.

Huge word of advice Pox -- which is mostly true for every away stadium for us, but especially OM -- IF you are wearing maroon, don't try sneaking in your own alcohol. Let a friend in red and blue do it for you. They use the cowbell prevention policy as a reason to search you pretty good more often than not, and it's a good chance they find your alcohol when they do. I got my whiskey poured out and ticket ripped up for the 05 game up there because of this. Never had another issue since...

I'm usually with ole miss fans and it's fine. You'll hear some snooty remarks here and there.

I sat in the OM student section the year we lost with a bunch of OM friends. Never had one word said to me besides the smack talk we would do amongst ourselves. I had maroon on but my jacket was zipped up to the top almost.

My experience is many of them are a bunch of obnoxious a-holes. As was said earlier, probably that much more so now that they've tanked . As much as I wanted to go and support the team, I went ahead and dumped my tickets last week thinking there was a good chance they would get rolled by Arkansas and the prices would come down a good bit.

If you are going with some Ole Miss folks might not be as bad, but I never have/will. Too many not so fond memories of dealing with their fans back when it was played in Jackson.

You can just wait and show up at half time. Most of the Ole Miss fans are gone by then.

I'll be in maroon and white.

I won't have any OM fans with me.

I've been to the grove as an LSU fan before many years ago and don't remember it being so bad.

I usually just ignore the comments but my family can be rather outspoken which in my opinion just makes it worse. I'll definitely report back with my experience.

Well it can't be much worse than an Ole Miss fan in Starkvile on the Egg Bowl.
