Personally, I think it's going to be a slow trudge through the recruiting cycle this time. We may get a couple of in state commitments early on, but a larger portion of our recruiting is out of state and I think that is going to take more time.

Any ideas on how many we take in this class?

Seniors

Baggett
Berkstresser
Boehm(I'm gonna be bummed losing him)
Brothers
Browning
Chappell
Dennis
Echard (Is he on scholarship?)
Green
Hall
Hansbrough
Hunt (Is he on scholarship?)
Johnson
Leftwich
McGovern
McNulty
Simon

That's up to 17 seniors (give or take a couple) that are on scholarship.

Juniors who may go early
Augusta
Brantley
Mauk
Newsom
Penton
Scherer

Brantley is the only one I think is likely to go early.

That means up to 18 scholarships that open up naturally. Figure on a handful leaving due to transfer etc... and maybe we're looking at another class around 22 or 23?????? What do y'all think?

4* OT Nathan Smith from California is visiting on 3/30.

Thompson and Scales say they haven't heard a word from Mizzou since Junior day. Not sure what's up there as both are local kids who have said they'd commit if offered.

I get the coaches are being more selective this year, but I would like to see a commitment from someone soon. We're the only SEC team without one and its almost April.

Seems they have other QBs higher on their board right now. Maybe he'll get an offer later, maybe he won't.

It's possible he just isn't good enough as well.

Oh he's good enough. He's blowing up right now. He'll be heading back east the the QB challenge. He did pretty well in the prelims.

I've watched him play a few times. He has beaten Lock head to head. He has made the twins from Blue Spring everyone was so high on look pedestrian. He's got it.

I don't have any idea why they are slow playing him. It's pretty dumb on Mizzous part. There are going to be some other offers comming. That's a given. At that point being slow played, he may just look elsewhere. It would be a huge miss for Pinkel. I don't know what he's missing that Mizzou is looking for unless they have another target they are looking at. This is where I think "Mizzou Made" kind of may be clouding sane judgement. Would hate to see him end up somewhere like Kansas ( unlikely) or even may be worse, Arkansas playing against Mizzou.

Could they (Mizzou) be affraid that they may have a conflict if Skylar winds up beating out Lock? Not saying he would, but you never know. They pulled the trigger on Lock pretty fast. I like Lock. But I think Skylar is more versatile. He's may be a more "dual threat" QB and Lock.may be more a Gabbert style QB.

Scales is particularly confusing. He's rack ng up a pretty good offer list, but maybe the coaches don't think he fits the system. Or have other guys rated higher. Who knows?
Same for Thompson. Seems to be behind a few other QBs on the coaches board.

I agree though. We need some guys to pull the trigger.

Mizzou is going to do what they normally do and that is to offer Thompson later on down the line when it will be too late. That's what happened with Ofodile last year when they called themselves waiting to make him prove that he should earn the offer.

Lol. Oregon was one of the last schools to offer. Months after Mizzou. Out of his 4 final schools, Mizzou was the first to offer. Maybe we should have slow played him more?

As for Thompson, of the 3 schools we are behind so far in offering, which one do you think is the biggest threat to stealing him from us? Illinois State, kU, or North Dakota State? Also how many QBs do you want to carry? Unless something changes, we already have 5 scheduled to be on our roster when he arrives. If the roster shakes up and it looks like we will heavily pursue a QB, Thompson seems to be high on the list.

ETA: I think there are only 4 QBs on the roster at that time instead of 5.

I'm sure we'll take at least 1 QB in this class. You never know who will pan out and who won't. Don't know about injuries. Don't know about transfers. They'll take at least 1.

Traditionally we take 1 QB a year so it wouldn't surprise me. I'm thinking it will be a player with less talent than Thompson unfortunately. The main reason is because Thompson has made it known, early playing time is important to him and on paper we don't have that. He will probably end up with a lot of good offers to choose from. From what I have seen and read, he is good and has the it factor. You would think there would be more offers out to him though so there must be something all the coaching staffs want to see more of.

I agree that if the roster shakes up due to the reasons you mentioned, they will pursue a QB harder. The PM folks have indicated that the coaches are not prioritizing a QB this year due to a small class.

Whoever it is, it will be the player with the most talent that they can get. Competition and depth is a good thing. If early playing time is important for Thompson, then you're probably right and it may not be him but it could end up being someone with even more talent. Could be less. Only time will tell.

Last I heard Mizzou was leading with Tre Williams. He said that if Mizzou offered he would be in Tiger stripes. They have already offered.

I see at least a dozen names on that list that we've offered.

I've gotten the impression that when we offer a top 100 player out of the region(Missouri, Kansas, Illinois and sometimes Iowa are in the region) we never really assign a coach to follow up.

That Espenesa kid from Edwardsville in the 2017 class is the #2 ranked player in the entire nation (not just at his position) per 247. It's way early, but even if he drops to 10th he would be an awesome get. I know he's an Iowa legacy or something, but maybe that DLineZou mantra will pay off. Besides, kids don't go to the same school as their parents, right?
