Since the arrival of Gus, we win with offense. It is not going to change. Few teams with prolific offenses have dominate defense. Stop bitching, calling for Johnson to be fired, and just accept it. The game is much more fun when

I agree. Kinda. I dont want to accept it but people who think we are all of the sudden going to have a old Auburn defense will be disappointed.

Not now. Its tough to have it both ways.

The reason it sucks like this is because you have zero room for error anywhere else on the field.

You can outscore your porous defense, but if you spot the other team points via offensive or special teams blunders, you lose.

Look at all the games we've lost since Gus has been here and they have one consistent quality: we gave away free points, either with a short field from an offensive turnover or special teams frick ups. This is why a good defense is preferred over a great offense.

A great offense will win you some games. A great defense will win you championships.

I don't expect to have a shutdown defense. I expect to have a "decent" defense. I don't want to go back to Tubbs era, I love having Gus here and hope he retires from here. EJs scheme isn't even the prob IMO. We just need to get more talent on the defensive side period.

I don't necessarily agree with that. To prove my point I will start with 2010. With a prolific O you just need a serviceable D. We don't have that. We didn't have that last year and it cost us then also.

That defense was inconsistent but it practically shut out bama in the second half of the iron bowl and won the day in the NCG. The 2010 team loses a game with the 2013 or 2014 defense IMO.

edit: almost forgot how it crushed USC in the SECCG, as well

I have always been on this train but the landscape has changed.

We need our defense to not be a clusterfrick. If we were able to stop teams on high percentage defense situations like 3rd and longer than 4 at even an average rate we are undefeated this year

Tiguar nailed it regarding the pressure and (just about) total responsibility the offense has.

Ellis has done the best job he can with the players at his disposal. Now, the soft zone he likes to play isn't going away, he ran the same at South Carolina and I don't like it, but he's the best we can really do as far as DCs go right now.

The lack of talent excuse is getting played out. We recruit top ten classes every year

how much of that top 10 talent consists of defensive players?

not asking to be a dick, I'm genuinely ignorant of how our classes have broken down the past few years

It's not even just the talent, some of our players in the secondary flat out just don't "get it" when it comes to assignments and their role in the scheme.

Agree here.

Disagree here. We make it way too easy on opposing QBs.

I assume it's because the fear is getting beat deep because our defensive backs aren't very good. Well I'd rather take some chances with blitzing and pressing the receivers and maybe forcing the other team into a mistake or getting a sack or something at the risk of letting up a 70 yard TD rather than letting them move right down the field with little dinks and dunks. Big plays are much less deflating than watching the other team repeatedly march down the field on you.

I want more aggression. I feel like early in the season, especially the KSU game, we were blitzing way more and having a lot more success.
