A former member of Hugh Freeze’s Ole Miss staff will help Auburn prepare for the Rebels this week.

After spending one season as an administrative intern in Oxford, former Arkansas State quarterback Ryan Aplin joined Gus Malzahn’s staff at Auburn this season as a graduate assistant. Freeze was then forced to change play calls and signs in the offseason. Aplin will watch film with the Tigers’ defense this week.

“Coach Malzahn knows the offense very well, too, but when you play quarterback for a guy you have really good insight,” Auburn defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson told reporters Sunday evening. “He won’t be able to tell us a whole lot we don’t see on film, but I think he will be able to kind of tell us what he would like to do if we do this. What he would be trying to attack us with if we try this and so forth.”

Aplin played under center for both Malzahn and Freeze at Arkansas State. He was a two-time Sun Belt Player of the Year.

According to Hugh Kellenberger of the Jackson Clarion-Ledger, Freeze admitted during his weekly news conference Monday that he was concerned about Aplin.

Well, Malzahn did say yesterday that Aplin would sit in on meetings this week. He was asked about it at the presser today and he answered. I think it's a valid concern.

Early excuses abound. He had Aplin last year when they played us and I don't recall Malzahn raising a flag.

Ole Miss couldn't keep him as a coach for whatever reason, so Freeze called Malzahn about taking him. I read about this in the offseason. They both coached the kid at Arkansas State

Someone called this earlier

Think about all the coaches, assistants are in the SEC who've worked with other coaches and assistants.... Clearly we put this guy on staff just for beating... Wait for it.... .... ..... Ole miss.

Not really! Freeze actually asked Malzahn to take this kid after Ole Miss couldn't keep him for some reason based on what I read

Way to take this out of context, media. It's a well known fact that Aplin has strayed from the LORD'S path and Coach Hugh is simply concerned for this poor boy's soul.

Aplin was the QB at Arkansas State when Malzahn and Freeze were both there consecutively. He knows both and has run the offense. So yeah, its possibly an advantage. Freezus better change his signals. We steal those things...

Ole Miss needs to hope for weather interference.

I would hate to be in Aplin's situation. Puts a lot of pressure to come through. Although, a great opportunity nonetheless.

Auburn has become the KGB of the SEC.
