Really good write up and preview of the SEC. Also much better and realistic ranking than the other that just came out. Although they still give USC no respect. But respect has to be earned and that is what the Gamecocks will do this year. I believe we get 5-6 teams in the dance.

What are y'all expecting out of the team this year? I've heard the Pearl hype and Yall are excited and all that, but what are the realistic expectations on this season?

We may well have a down year by our standards but there's a zero percent chance we finish 12th. I don't say that due to high expectations for our team but just because the bottom of the SEC has proven to be so shitty we just aren't capable of falling that far at this point.
The writers saying we will turn to Deuce Bello in the backcourt gives a good indication they have no idea what's going on with most of the rosters they are covering. That's fine though. I like the under the radar role a lot better than having Frank Haith teams that were hyped every year and then muddled their way to the middle of the pack by not playing defense.

We have no defense. Will probably score well at home. I figure .500 in conference and maybe nit. Pearl's ability may be good enough to get to the bubble.

Honestly I can see UGA at that 3 spot. They came on late last season and have a good group coming back. Fox is due for a decent team.

I think there will be some improvement, but also realize it will take some time for Pearl to get all the pieces in place. I am a very casual bball fan to be honest, but Coach has even got me interested in watching more games.

The thing for both Pearl at Auburn and Tyndall at Tennessee this year is the same thing we dealt with under Haith for the last couple years - what's going to come out of the crackerjack box you have with all these attempted quick fix transfers. Are the Antoine Masons and Ian Chileses et al going to A) translate their talents from some smaller D1 school or juco immediately to the high major level and B) even if they do, are they all going to mesh with *each other* in time to have a productive season from start to finish?
It usually makes for tantalizing/exasperating seasons in which you will show flashes of good play but always feel like you should be better than you are if the pieces would just mesh. Kentucky does it yearly but with 5 star freshmen who are NBA ready, sure sometimes even they have it not quite work out (2013) but its a much safer bet. Going the D1 transfer/juco transfer route and hoping it all just comes together in one single season shot is something that these new coaches feel they had to do, but its a total crapshoot. The Fred Hoiberg Iowa State model is very difficult to master. Will be interesting to see if anyone in the league pulls it off this year.

Anthony Grant's team will not finish in the top half of the league.

Doesn't look like Chiles is going to be in the rotation for us.
Punter/Richardson
Hubbs/Mostella
Richardson/Baulkman
Moore/Reese
Carmichael/Woodson
Looks like our rotation. Our wings are pretty good and I like Carmichael but we have no point guard.
I would guess 7th-10th in the league.

If Trayvon Reed makes it in mid season we have an outside shot at the NIT. Pearl is a great coach/recruiter but we are still the least talented team in the league and have absolutely no size at any position. Next season is when we will start making noise.

I think they had a flash in the pan season last year. UGA will probably be back to a sub .500 team in the conference this year. They are just really talented starved compared to the Top 4 teams on these lists.

What else do you suggest?
Or expect?
Grant is a dull, uninspiring coach whose players play similarly. And that is also what has largely become of the Bama basketball fanbase.
And that is sad to have to sit back and watch no one seem to care about it in the athletic department.

I didn't like yall hiring Grant, at the time, but as a VCU and LSU fan, it worked out quite well.

I think Auburn is a year or two away from making noise. I'm extremely excited to have Pearl as our HC. It's been a long horrible time following AU BB. I am hopeful that Coach Pearl will have Auburn routinely in the mix come March Madness time in the future.
(I think A. Grant gets a lot of unfair criticism. I think he takes UA to the tournament this year.)
Edit: Thanks for the link. Good read on the upcoming season.
