The flaw is just basic math: 5 is more than 4.

In college football, there are five so-called "power conferences" and just four spots in the College Football Playoff. That means no matter how it shakes out, at least one champion from the SEC, ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, and Pac-12 is going to miss out on the playoff.

Except that there aren't five real power conferences.

I don't really see the flaw in that, especially this year. the playoffs aren't supposed to award you a spot for winning your conference. it's supposed to pick the 4 best teams, regardless of conference

They should of gone 8 teams. 1 from each power 5 and 3 at large.

well before this year there were 5 power conferences and only 2 spots.

This is why they should have used the BCS formula to determine the four teams.

this is what I wanted all along.

4 teams is perfect, it doesn't need to be any more than that (although I'm sure money will dictate that it eventually will). Just use the BCS and take 4 instead of 2 and we're golden.

There is a bigger flaw than that, from a fairness standpoint, which is that there are actually 10 FBS conferences. With 5 "power" conferences, the other five will never play for a championship.

Think about that. CFB is the only college sport where half of the teams in a division have no chance (OK, an extremely small chance) of playing for a championship.

The only fair thing to do is to expand to a 12 or 16 team format and include all conference winners. That, or relegate the "non-power" conferences to FCS.

I think 8 teams plus use the BCS formula. I realize that adds an extra game, but would make it more interesting. However, I could still live with four using the BCS formula.

Math suggest that 2/5 is less than 4/5. So it was a bigger problem under the BCS.

Four teams is hardly a playoff at all, in my opinion.

This is what will bring about the next big split in college football. Same thing happened in the 80s with Divison 1-A and 1-AA.

It is interesting how many just go off the quote in the OP and not read the entire article, and the answer may be the same. It makes me wonder how many times I have made a conclusion based off just a title and/or quote.

Yep. It makes sense, sitting here at my desk, to relegate the non-power conferences to FCS. But try convincing East Carolina, for example, that they have no seat at the grown up's table.

The biggest flaw is obviously - there isnt an 8 or 16 team playoff.

4 team really?

I say no automatic ins even with 8. If your conference sucks why reward it? There's a good chance all Big12's teams will have 2 losses and none inside the top 10 in the end. I don't think any of them are good enough for even 8 team PO.

i would imagine the "power" conferences would all expand to 16 teams, at least giving you 80 D-1 teams, but yeah there would be quite the legal battle if that were to happen
