Yeah, I didn't want any gruff from Corn Dogs when I post on the Fark board and the OT, . I've got two UA degrees. My wife has two UA degrees. My son went to the UA preschool. My wife and I both work at UA.

Like I said, it's one those "I hate TN, but all the TN fans and posters I've met personally are good folks" kind of deals. I even have some TN alum family members. We don't talk about them, though.

UA got a huge payout from the federal gov after the war. We still own coal fields given as reparations and get royalties off of them.

I was in Lesion Field in 97, when PM beat us and led the band in that horrid song. I was a student during the Fat Phil Princess Leah Dumbose era. My best friend went up there for grad school and got done dirty by the department there. Hating on the idea of TN will always be one of my favorite pastimes.

As for the Tejanos - they stole the one-star flag from the Republic of West Florida. Sam Houston was a drunk kid toucher. The Austin's were scumbags. Travis was from Womack Hill, AL and was a deadbeat who abandoned his wife and children. And their second largest city is named for an Alabama county - a shithole of one at that.

Can't blame you for avoiding that - not worth the shite.

Mr. Balzac, it would appear that you're my evil twin or perhaps my UA doppelganger. I'm a double alum of UT and have worked at UT. Was a student when PM led the band in glorious victory! I even have a Bammer in the family but try not to talk about him. And of course, outside of the the front about y'all being evil, I have many a friends who are Bammers.

I'm sorry your best friend was done dirty by one of the grad depts. Grad school can be very, very, political at times. I was fortunate that my mentor was the guy everyone in the dept. respected and feared so I never had to deal with anything like that - ours wasn't really political in any case but many depts are. Having worked in academia it's the rule rather than the exception and that's true everywhere -- really the luck of the draw as to whether or not you'll find a dept. where politics are kept to a minimum and those things can emerge for the strangest things.

And oh yes, I love to hate you Bammers. It's odd because I've always felt a begrudging mutual respect between both schools alongside a lot of hate. That's one of the more unusual aspects of the rivalry, imo. But oh yes, I love to hate you.

We need to figure out the best way of doing this as well as the right timing (I'm afraid we are too late to do it this week because there will be a flood of other UT-BAMA stories that this will get lost in and we need to take advantage of social media - websites, twitter, and the like). Vol fans will cringe but emails plus a petition - yes I said it - that fans of both schools can sign and which can be forwarded to both ADs might work best.

I'm an academic, too ...we (UA) gave UT one of our problems (a-hole faculty member). That was a glorious day.

My friend's problem was his advisor: the guy ran off at least three students who ended up getting PhD's elsewhere, so ability wasn't the issue. I ran into another of the same person's students last year. He was having similar problems. Assholes are everywhere, but they're even more fun to hate on when they're at a rival school.

That was a cold night in Lesion Field.

That's awesome.

And gee thanks for passing the trash (not that I truly blame you). Unfortunately, it always seems that the advisers like that find a way to stick around. However, when it gets to the point of that many students run off (and grad depts are often small enough to where it's easily noticeable) the depts. need to do something but too often they stay in their own little worlds and never pay attention.

At any rate, one of my friends going back to when we were kids (also a UT double alum) is currently teaching at UAB. So we've sent some to your state too - lucky for you she's good people.

Why stop with the uniforms? This was 1958...don't know if it pre-dated Neyland's endzones, but what the hell.

Now this is certainly sad and heartbreaking, but its pertinent to the series. This happened just days after the 1965 game which ended in a 7-7 tie. Alabama had been heavily favored and hadn't lost to UT since 1960. The proverbial "Vol Nation" was ecstatic about the tie, especially the odd way it ended. Then this happened just a few days later.

Yes Legion Field used to do that and it does pre-date Neyland's usage (or at least the use of the orange and white checkerboard). I believe Legion went away from it and then we adopted it. It wasn't entirely uncommon for there to be diamond or checkerboard designs way back in the day (just like many of the old leather helmets were exactly like Michigan's helmets - Michigan just kept the design and improved on it the way we did while it disappeared elsewhere).

That said, I don't know if Bama would ever do checkerboards at home just because it's become so associated with Neyland (I think a lot of your fans and ours - not knowing or caring about the complete history of TSIO would object to it) although personally I wouldn't be opposed to if used solely for TSIO - think it would be pretty neat actually to honor TSIO (at least once and especially if we ever did a throwback uni game). Like I said Legion used to have them although I don't know if we took it from there or elsewhere.

ETA: I read somewhere y'all did them in either 88 or 89. I think there might've been a short period of use at Bryant-Denny at some point.

With the checkerboard endzones at Legion Field. And lol at the UT player throwing the ball up into the stands!

Wow thanks for giving me a bit of history I never knew about even if it is tragic. I almost thought you were messing with my head given they're named Majors and Jones. Apparently, Asst. Coach Rash died later.

So bizarre that we'd have 2 Head Coaches bearing those surnames and one who was related. And Asst. Coach Bill Majors was Johnny's brother. That explains why Johnny drank so much - Bill was his youngest brother.

And this bit is just eery:

quote:

The impact of the crash was such that authorities pegged the time of the crash when they found Jones’ bowl watch from the 1957 Sugar Bowl yards away from the scene, stopped at 6:53 a.m.

I know there's been some confusion about the origins of the checkerboard endzones. Here's a recent video from UT Sports that explains.
