Anyone else notice that the arrival of mildly-annoying (but persistent) little Ishmael coincides almost perfectly with the disappearance of mildly-annoying (but persistent) little LSUforLife12?

I found his picture.

Might be fun to post our favorite Bieber pix every time he starts a thread.

I have a completely serious question for you gentlemen ... and I suppose for anyone who enjoys "trolling" other posters. (Not that I am accusing anyone in particular of that hobby).

Background. I participate at least sporadically on maybe a half-dozen internet fora. Other than the Rant, all of them are based on subject matter (e.g. photography, gardening, etcetera), and the exchanges are uniformly civil, informative and (usually) interesting. I actually served as an Admin for about two years, and I was not shy about dealing with anyone who attempted to alter the collegiality.

The Rant is clearly very different. At times, its primary reason for existence actually seems to be childish name-calling and trolling.

What is the appeal of "trolling?" I honestly do not understand it. Psych 101, with you gentlemen as the profs.

I have seen pics of this guy wearing 'horn gear, but cannot find them now

Ran another search and saw that this guy died back in 2012. Weird as he was, that is a bit sad. He was a fixture on the Drag.

Sure. But "why?" Boredom? Venting from having to be too civil IRL? Borderline sociopathy? (Kidding)

I know that several of you were utterly convinced that I was trolling you a few weeks ago. I was not. I just view TAMU and Aggie sports through a different lens than you. CardboardBoxer nailed that one.

I do admit that it is fun to make the occasional snarky comment to someone who seems to deserve it, but I see that as being different than setting out with the intent of harassing and annoying people. I do not understand why some see it as acceptable or even admirable to behave in a manner that would get one shunned (if not hospitalized) in the real world.

Because its funny.

I always laugh at the "Bert is fat" liners because its just a way of not taking Arkansas fans seriously. Imagine the feeling of starting a very coherent, well thought out thread, only to have it followed with "Bret is fat" lines?

Or maybe I'm just too childish.

"Bert is fat" does not strike me as "trolling." I agree that this sort of post is a bit childish and a bit narcicistic ("stop your substantive discussion and LOOK AT MEEEEEEE"), but it is not an affirmative effort to inflict pain, etcetera.

I am talking about two different behaviors, I suppose. One is the LSUforLife12 sort of thing, where he starts asinine threads and jumps into existing threads just to incite discord.

Another is the guy who spends hours plotting how to draw people into a discussion on a given topic, expecting certain responses, with the sole intent of atacking when he receives those responses.

I actually found a series of interesting articles on this issue, including this one.

Basically, they say "Internet Trolls Are Narcissists, Psychopaths, and Sadists" with an emphasis on the sadism. Interesting.

This is not trolling. This is enjoying chaos.

This is trolling. Getting a response out of someone by stating fact is fun.

It's a practiced art. I'm not very good at it, but it's fun to try.

Sure. But "why?"

Why do one brother tease his other brothers? I mean, doesn't he love him?

What it comes down to is that there is SUCH a consistent narrative in the SEC that EVERY team has all this good and bad baggage. By default fans are supposed to drink the koolaid regarding their team, but if you troll correctly you can catch someone off guard and get them to admit a real failing in their position. Its like sneaking up on your brother and farting on his face.

Compare that to say, debating politics online. I did that for YEARS Hank, and I am damn good at it. I can debate most policies from both sides! But you know what sucks? No matter how many political arguments I win, IT JUST MAKES IT WORSE. I mean, I can come to the right answer 99/100 times and it won't happen because those in Washington only care about the arguments that contribute the most to their campaign, not the ones that are most sound. So I end up even MORE discouraged about the whole political system when I debate politics because I don't feel closure because my great reasoning can never be followed.

College football, on the other hand, is superficial. The games don't matter in the real sense, I mean unless you are from the state of Alabama. Its all bluster. So I can "scratch my itch" and go against people intellectually online without the depression that debating something more important brings. Just like politics we all have our sides and our standard arguments, so it ends up being VERY satisfying.

As to the base level of why we do it, well we want to prove we are smart around fellow primates. Same reason some guys will lift extra if people are in the gym, or women will order salad if they are eating at a steakhouse with a bunch of people.

Its gamesmanship.

I personally enjoy it because we lacked this banter in the Big 12. Every Single Argument in the Big 12 was basically a contest of what other fans can break Godwin's law first. The attitude wasn't fun but nasty, it had the edge of real hatred (and not the Rant's fake hate) on it. I am happy to be past that.

For the TL;DR crowd : Bert is still fat

quote:

"Bert is fat" does not strike me as "trolling."

Bert is fat is often used - myself as well - but not sure anybody really takes it serously. After living in Arkansas for a part of my life it can be used to deflect a bully before they can attack. Much like when I joke about jizz jars and sheep when discussing TAMU to deflect before the other poster can launch an attack.

My belief in the SEC as a family is real as my life has been spent living and loving the south in general. Being old enough to remember Georgia Tech and Tulane while those before me were connected to Sewanee as well. I to do not understand the value of a troll especially when it covers up real and interesting discussions.

Something as simple as starting this thread when I noticed Stanford had never played an SEC team at their home. Pretty soon all kinds of posters united and each contributed to the eventual research as a whole. Overall it was a good thread but fewer and fewer seem to result in useful discovery or discussion.

My off beat sense of humor may be misunderstood but my support of folks are very real. I support Kige often, as he seems genuine and he really is passionate about sports without all the name calling. This new guy Clanga from Mississippi State seems along the same line from the videos he sent to Paul Finebaum. Even my avatar reflects my appreciation of folks who are just happy to be at a game. If I am sitting next to any of these 3 gentlemen I feel sure there would be amicable discussion and lots of high 5 handslaps. I am old school and I a too damn old to change now.

quote:

I am talking about two different behaviors, I suppose.

it may all root back to a single behavior, and that is to focus the spotlight on self (or other people) as that is the easy route. Discussing things or ideas requires more effort and listening to learn from others to grow ones own point of view. When I was young you went somewhere an took pictures of other people, things, or places. Now folks just go elsewhere and take pictures of themselves. Radical departure in a generation or less. With no Facebook or Twitter account nobody else is bored by my less than exciting life. The younger folks think the world is wowed when they say they got ice cream. Heaven forbid they actually discuss with the vendor how ice cream is made or the history of ice cream.

Some folks live pretty bland lives and perhaps trolling allows them to displace their daily anger on unknown and invisible posters on the internet. It amuses folks who go after me on the internet who would never do so in the real world. Mostly they amuse me, but if I were still young and had limited social interactions or skills it could easily be quite hurtful. Different generations and different levels of empathy in the base populations.

Some groups eliminate their trolls and some embrace them. Personally, I would like to think the good folks with TAMU roots would be the former and not the latter.

Trolling is part of the reason the SEC rant was started, or so it's been said. Gives everyone a common playground.

The definition of "trolling" has evolved quite a but over the years. It used to apply specifically to bored people who tried to draw others into stupid arguments. These days, I can make a joking comment that I consider to be obviously facetious and be accused of trolling.

Bottom line: don't take it too seriously and take a break if other posters are pissing you off.

Actually, no one is pissing me off at all.

I just got to thinking about the psychology of engaging in (IRL) socially-unacceptable behavior, and calling it recreation.

Honestly, I thought there had to be some sort of pathology there.

In real life, you'd be able to see the other fella's facial expressions and laugh when he laughed. It's not that deep or complicated.

Of course, being an Aggie from Houston with a lot of Louisiana ties, I could be a little biased in thinking the Rant is normal. I mean, I show up for a family get together on Saturday and the first thing my dad says to me is,"WHAT HAPPENED TO YOUR TEAM?"
