Marc Curles' referee crew blew a call in 2009 vs. UGA (i.e., they called an "excessive celebration" penalty on A.J. Green after his go-ahead TD reception put UGA up 13-12 over LSU w/ 1:09 remaining in the 4th qtr), then 2 weeks later they blew another call that led to Arkansas' 23-20 loss to Florida. Subsequently, his crew was suspended for the next 2 weeks.

Matt Moore's referee crew (specifically, Field Judge Mike Williams) blew targeting calls vs. Ray Drew (was ejected for pushing the QB after a pass) and Ramik Wilson (whom separated Vanderbilt's WR Jonathan Krause from a pass on a crucial 4th down w/ a shoulder hit to the chest, but ended up as a 15-yd penalty that gave Vandy a first down and the 'Dores scored a TD shortly thereafter).

As for Hubert Owens' referee crew, they made a bad holding call on Brandon Kublanow late in the 1st qtr that wiped out Todd Gurley's 54-yd TD run and a bad intentional grounding call on Hutson Mason (ball hit the defender's leg enroute to Quayvon Hicks) on 1st and goal from S. Carolina's 4-yd line late in the 4th qtr.

No doubt that UGA has been the recipient of many bad calls over the years that have cost the Dawgs a win (e.g., Jasper Sanks infamous "fumble" vs. Ga Tech on the Yellowjackets 1-yd line in 1999 that referee Al Ford's crew was subsequently suspended for).

Fwiw, I'd like to see the NCAA and NFL professionalize referees and their crews to make it a full-time occupation (currently they are part-timers). While it won't eliminate bad calls (after all the refs are imperfect as we all are), it should reduce them.

If the Refs can't make a little money betting on the side how are they going to make ends meet?

My step-dad is good friends with Penn. Penn told my step-dad this past Sunday, he is going to the BIG next year. Lots of troubles right now with the SEC refs.

Almost every one of these refs are somewhat well off business men. Some more so than others. Many own mid to large sized businesses or are senior level execs at their company. I used to sell to one who owned a construction firm in Atlanta. He was a long time ACC official and single handedly the most arrogant SOB I ever dealt with. There were not many bare places on his office walls that didn't have blown up photos of him officiating some game. He was particularly fond of the ones showing him arguing with Head a Coaches like Bowden, etc.. He was very full of himself. I imagine most of these officials get drunk on the perceived prestige of being an official.

I seem to remember Al Ford screwing us in the GA Tech game on Jasper Sanks non-fumble.

He caught holy hell from UGA fans.

I did not know this.

From 69Dawg in the comments section on blutarksy

quote:

I know that Penn is the only Ref that not only blew calls but either intentionally or because of stupidity could not follow the damn rule book in our game against UT at Athens. We were 2nd and goal and we threw a fade to Mohammed Massaqui (sp) in the endzone. The Back Judge threw a flag because the UT defender had held MM. Penn penalized UT half the distance but did not give us an automatic first down for holding an eligible receiver. So it was now 3rd and goal. We failed to get the TD and kicked a FG. When asked after the game why the 1st down had not been awarded Penn said the crew did not know if MM was an eligible receiver. Now either Penn is a moron or he is a lying sack of cow dung. If he was ineligible why didn’t they penalize us for it. To miss a call is one thing to not apply the rules correctly is unforgivable.
