Lowe’s has new rules regarding how it can label building products in California. A Superior Court judge laid out terms by which the retailer must advertise its 2x4s and other dimensional materials in a $1.6 million settlement order and final judgement filed on August 27. The order, brought on as part of a civil consumer protection action, lists three main rules for the retailer to follow going forward:

“Common descriptions” must be followed by actual dimensions and labeled as such. For instance, a 2×4 must be followed with a disclaimer that the wood is actually 1.5-inches by 3.5-inches and include a phrase equal or similar to “actual dimensions.”
“Popular or common product description,” like the word 2×4, must be “clearly described as ‘popular name,’ ‘popular description,’ or ‘commonly called.'”
Dimension descriptions are required to use the “inch-pound unit,” meaning they must include abbreviations such as “in., ft., or yd.,” and can’t use symbols like ‘ or ” to denote measurements.

Only we, Thailand and Liberia still use the ancient Imperial System for measures and weights.

I don't see whats so bad about Imperial.
Metric is already being used on lots of American goods and will slowly drift into the mainstream over the next generation or two.

I don't like people being forced to use metric, because "bring me that 355ml coke" doesn't sound right, no matter how correctly labeled it is.

It's stupid and non uniform.

A mile is 5200ish feet. A km is 1000 meters. The powers of ten is a beautiful thing, especially for calculations. SI system or bust.

Non uniform isn't always stupid.

I'm actually more prone to miss-write my powers of ten and miscalculate than I am to forget that four quarts make a gallon, or 5280 feet are in a mile.

It is what it is, and I'm totally against the gov't forcing the use of metric.

Anyone with half a brain knows that nominal dimensions are not ACTUAL dimensions. fricking retards. I hope California is burned, in it's entirety, by a fire and then falls into the ocean following a gigantic earthquake. California is proof that there is no God.

I agree they should label it by true dimensions and not by that tiny print they use. However, what are these "terms"? Are those laws passed by the judicial branch?

It just takes a little practice. 1 km = 1 X 10^3 m. Simple. You don't have to remember a hodgepodge of conversion factors and just use the appropriate factor of 10. Couldn't be simpler if you just use scientific notation.

Just because you've grown up knowing those conversions doesn't mean it is easier to use in a vacuum, just that you grew up in America.

FWIW, F > C for pratical purposes of temperature. That's one thing we get right.

I'm hopeless with 'counting' decimal spots
I just have to double check my work on all the metric units or I'm going to make some shockingly stupid conversion mistakes.

Why stop at C? Lets go full Kelvin.

The US military uses Metric for a lot of things, including maps. Anyone who has worked on a car can tell you half the bolts will be imperial and half metric, that's just how it is, although the more recent the model, the more likely it is that everything is metric.

Its not just the imperial system we are stupid on. We insist on using AM/PM for time even though the 24hr clock is WAY simpler and easier, and the way we write dates is ridiculous. "I sent him the report on 7/8" Wait, was that August 7th or July 8th? Dumb. Everything should be Day, Month, Year, like the rest of the goddamn world.

All of the above are already used by the miliary. We went by DD/MM/YY, 24hr clock, metric. Simple and easy.

Or could just be 1/2 liter coke. We already do larger sizes in Liters.

Counting decimals is annoying, I'll grant you that. The simple conversions are helpful when you have a lot of units floating around.

Absolute temps wouldn't make much sense in everyday life, but I'd be ok with going full R.

We're like Jazz. Bippa bop shedoop...

What's wrong with being a little unorthodox? Imagine other countries who try to figure out what the frick we're saying. "Six miles from target..."

Having to Google that shite.

Nothing is wrong with it.

The metric system is just easier to use.

I've found it's easier to pick up chicks using the Imperial System.

Being unique and all that. Being white helps a lot, too.

Anybody going to a home improvement store and buying 2x4s that doesn't know that the dimensions aren't actually 2" by 4" probably shouldn't be buying lumber in the first damn place.

Buncha damn retards.

Imperial can be halved and quartered and thirded (word?) easier. 5280 can be divided by 32, 16, 8, 4, 2, 3, and 5 and still be working with whole numbers. 12 divides neatly by 2,3 and 4. 100/3 requires decimals or fractions. 10 divided into fourths has the same problem.

The power of ten is only better when dealing with whole units.
